Tools, Enchantments, Building Blocks, Lanterns and Ores

Handwerk (German for "craftsmanship") — formerly known as DayOfMind Additions.

Handwerk speeds up resource gathering, terraforming, and farming with area-of-effect tools, rounds out your building palette, and sets every overworld ore into the rock it grew in. Simple and vanilla-friendly. Built by OxFaTech as the heart of the Fernweh modpack (formerly known as DayOfMind), it works standalone in any modpack across all supported versions.

Key Features

🛠️ Tools

A family of tools that turns tedious jobs into a single click. Every tool comes in all six tiers (Wood → Netherite) and works with modded blocks too.

  • Terraformer Shovel — Excavates earth-like blocks in an area, creates paths, and toggles between dirt and dirt path (sneak to reverse).
  • Hammer — Mines stone-like blocks in an area and creates paths.
  • Prospector Pickaxe — Vein-mines an entire ore deposit at once.
  • Lumberjack Axe — Fells an entire tree and strips logs in an area.
  • Harvester Scythe — Right-click to harvest and replant crops.

♻️ Reforging

Your tools grow with you instead of being re-crafted from scratch.

  • Reforging Rune — A craftable smithing item that upgrades an Iron or Gold tool to Diamond, transferring its enchantments and wear.
  • Netherite Upgrades — Promote a Diamond tool to Netherite using a vanilla smithing template, exactly like vanilla gear.

🌟 Enchantments

Available at the enchanting table and listed in the mod's dedicated creative tab.

  • Wide Reach (I–II) — Widens the affected area of radius tools (and the Lodestar Charm's pull).
  • Magnetism (I–II) — Sends the drops from blocks you mine or harvest straight to you (does not act as a general vacuum). Level II also pulls in experience. Works on both Handwerk's tools and vanilla mining tools.

🧲 Lodestar Charm

A mystical trinket that draws nearby dropped items and experience toward you.

  • Works from your off-hand out of the box.
  • With an accessory mod installed (Ohmega or Trinkets Updated), you can equip it in a dedicated accessory slot instead.
  • Enchantable with Wide Reach to extend its pull radius.

🏗️ Architectural Options

Expand your building palette with variants that inherit the look and behavior of their base blocks.

  • Slabs, Stairs & Trapdoors for a huge range of vanilla blocks — including trickier ones like dirt path, Crying Obsidian, and Magma.
  • True to their base — Crying Obsidian variants still weep tear particles, Magma variants still burn and form bubble columns in water, dirt path slabs/stairs keep their lower profile, and grass variants turn snowy under snowfall.
  • Lanterns — Small, large, and redstone-powered variants in materials like Copper, Amethyst, and Diamond (includes copper weathering).
  • Redstone Chains — Conduct redstone power along their axis for compact, tidy wiring.
  • Grass Stairs & Slabs — Biome-tinted so they blend perfectly into the landscape.

⛏️ Ore Variants

Ores that match their surrounding rock perfectly.

  • All eight overworld ores (coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, emerald) embedded in granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, and sulfur and cinnabar in the 26.2 sulfur caves.
  • Resource-pack friendly — The rock keeps its plain vanilla texture, so any pack restyling granite, tuff, or sulfur applies seamlessly.

🌿 Quality of Life

  • Configurable Fast Leaf Decay — Quicker tree cleanup with adjustable timing (optional, can be disabled in the config).
  • Vanilla Shovel Tweak — The plain shovel can also toggle between dirt and path (optional, can be disabled in the config).
  • Consistent Block Effects — Every variant keeps the exact properties of its base block.
  • Craftable Name Tags — Craft name tags from string, a sign, paper, and an iron nugget — no fishing or trading required (Note: Minecraft 26.1 already includes a vanilla crafting recipe for name tags).

🏆 Advancements

A dedicated Handwerk advancement tab guides you through crafting each tool family, forging the Reforging Rune, reaching Netherite, and building your first redstone circuit.

Installation

🚀 Just a few clicks

  1. Download the mod from Modrinth or CurseForge.
  2. Drop the .jar into your mods folder.
  3. Add the dependencies for your loader, matching your Minecraft version:
    • Fabric — Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin
    • NeoForge (26.x) — Kotlin for Forge

Handwerk adds custom blocks, so it belongs on the server and every client — a server-only install won't work.

Optional companions: Ohmega or Trinkets Updated (provides an accessory slot for the Lodestar Charm) and MidnightLib for our mod configuration.

🛠️ Building from Source

Handwerk builds a single source tree into Fabric and native NeoForge jars across every supported Minecraft version. The multi-version (Stonecutter) and multi-loader (platform layer) setup, the build commands, and how to add a version are documented in docs/BUILD.md.

🧪 Testing a Release

Before a release, Handwerk is verified across every supported Minecraft version and loader (Fabric and native NeoForge on 26.x). The full acceptance checklist lives in docs/Handwerk-Test-Protocol.ods — a spreadsheet (opens in LibreOffice Calc or Excel) featuring:

  • One row per feature test, detailing the exact in-game commands and expected results.
  • A Status dropdown (Pass / Fail / Blocked / N/A / Open) and a note field per target.
  • A Summary sheet that tallies the results and automatically displays a per-target release status.

Assemble the test instances from the reports generated by the “Publish Mods (alle Versionen, Dry-Run)” run configuration — one file per upload under build/publish-reports/, as <version>.txt and <version>-neoforge.txt, each listing the jar’s filename and its required and optional dependencies. Export the Test Protocol sheet as CSV for machine-readable results.

# Handwerk 0.16.2 — 26.3 | fixes from a full review Every file in the mod was read through, line by line, and checked against what it actually does in the game. Everything that came out of it is fixed here. In numbers: 140 files touched, 4,176 lines written and 2,221 thrown away — one line taken back out for every two put in, which is about the ratio you want from a release that went looking for mistakes instead of features. ## 🩹 Fixes & tweaks - **Redstone chains had no recipe and dropped nothing.** They sat in the creative tab and nowhere else — break one in survival and it was simply gone. Any chain plus redstone dust now gives the redstone chain of the same kind, and they drop when broken. The "Chain Reaction" advancement is reachable again. - **Waxing a copper lantern or chain now works in the crafting grid.** A honeycomb next to it seals it at the colour it has. Lantern, redstone and honeycomb together does both steps at once. - **Small and large lanterns were the same recipe.** Only one of the two could ever be crafted. The large lantern now takes two ingots and a different shape, so both work. Same for their redstone versions. - **Every copper lantern shared one recipe.** Weathering was ignored, so no matter which one you wanted, you got the same lantern back. Each state has its own conversion recipe now — and adding redstone to an oxidised lantern gives an oxidised redstone lantern, not a shiny new one. - **Copper lanterns asked for a copper block instead of an ingot** on 26.2 and 26.3. Nine times the price for the same lantern. - **The middle copper redstone lantern had the wrong shape** from 26.2 on — the mod's own lantern instead of the vanilla one the small and large variants are built to differ from. All eight weathering stages. - **Weathered copper lanterns can no longer be crafted directly.** Let them age, or wax the colour you want — that is what the weathering is for. Waxed ones stay craftable. - **Dropped the recipe that turned a whole lantern into a smaller one.** It cost more than it gave. - Lantern and chain conversions no longer care where you put the ingredients in the grid. - **Grass stairs and slabs were the wrong green.** Yellower than the grass block they copy, in the inventory and in your hand. They now take their colour from the same place vanilla does, so a resource pack that recolours grass reaches them too. - **Grass stairs and slabs changed colour in one hard step at biome borders** on Fabric, from 26.1 on. They blend across the border now, like the grass around them. - **Upside-down grass stairs showed a seam where two of them met.** The grass edge was a hundredth of a block off-centre, so one stair's edge stood proud of its neighbour's. - **Grass stairs and slabs threw green dirt when you broke them.** The break particles were taking the biome's grass colour even though the particle texture is plain dirt — vanilla's grass block deliberately leaves those particles alone. Fixed on 26.1 and newer; on 1.21.x the older rendering code offers no way to opt out, so it stays green there. - **Crying obsidian slabs and stairs dripped upwards.** The top-half ones shed tears from their top face, which no vanilla crying obsidian does. They now drip from the sides and the underside only, like the full block. - **Hanging lanterns sat a pixel below a vanilla lantern next to them.** The large and small ones now hang at the same height as vanilla's, and the box you see when you aim at them follows the model instead of staying a pixel low. The medium lantern always did this correctly. - **Magnetism took other players' drops.** Anything dropped within three blocks of your block counted as yours — including what someone next to you had just mined or thrown — and once claimed, they could no longer pick it up. It takes only what your own block dropped now, and experience orbs follow the same rule instead of hoovering up any that were lying around. The Lodestar Charm is unchanged and still collects everything. - **Drops no longer sag on the way to you.** They fly straight, which decides whether a vein in a cave ceiling ends up in your inventory or in the lava below. - **Leaving a world while drops were still flying to you kept that world in memory.** Not visible while playing, but it added up over a session of hopping between worlds. - **Ohmega 1.6.0-beta.19 is the build Handwerk expects now** (and 1.5.21 on the older targets). beta.19 reorganised its API, which had switched Handwerk's accessory diagnostics off with a message blaming the wrong version. - **The game could crash on startup when Ohmega was installed.** Ohmega ships two different accessory APIs for the same Minecraft versions, and Handwerk chose between them by game version — install the other line and the mod died while registering its items. It now looks at what is actually there and leaves the accessory integration switched off instead of taking the game down. - **NeoForge: the ore variant advancement could be awarded for a block that was never broken** — if another mod cancelled the break. It needs the drops to actually appear now. - **The ore variant advancement could be earned in creative mode, or with a tool too weak to drop anything** — on Fabric. It is an advancement for *obtaining* an ore variant, so it now asks that you actually got one, which is the rule NeoForge already followed. - **The creative tabs listed everything backwards.** All 225 blocks, in every vanilla tab: the chains stood ahead of the lanterns, waxed oxidised copper ahead of plain, and the ore variants ran cinnabar first instead of granite. - **Lanterns are sorted by size now** — small, medium, large, each followed by its redstone version, and for copper that repeats per weathering stage. The Handwerk tab also shows the vanilla lantern and chain that belong in each row, so nothing is missing between the pieces you build from. - **The harvester scythe replanted for free.** Every harvest handed you the full drop *and* a new plant, so each crop left you one seed ahead of doing it by hand. It now takes a single seed out of that same harvest to replant — nothing is lost by it, the seed stands in the field as the next plant, and you end up exactly where hand-harvesting leaves you. A crop that drops no seed at all leaves the tile bare, the same as breaking it yourself. The old behaviour is one switch away in the config. - **The scythe now clears a whole canopy at once.** Leaves and vines are followed as far as they connect, instead of a 3x3 at a time. Cobwebs and glow lichen keep the small area. - **A single scythe swing could destroy the scythe.** Bamboo and connected leaves were charged one point of durability per block, so a swing into a bamboo field or a canopy cost far more than the tool was worth — a wooden scythe did not survive one of them. A swing now costs at most as much as the area it covers, and a bamboo plant counts as one cut, the way vanilla fells the whole stalk in one break. - **Area tools no longer kept working after they broke.** A shovel with one use left converted all nine blocks; an axe stripped the rest of the tree. Tools can break mid-swing now, the way vanilla tools do — Unbreaking and Mending work on them as usual. - **Blocks in an area swing ignored what they do when they break.** Ice cleared with a shovel's 3x3 left air where breaking it by hand leaves water, and none of the extra blocks counted towards your mined-blocks statistics or cost you any hunger. Every block in the area now breaks exactly like the one you aimed at. - **Tools were held the wrong way round in the off hand.** All thirty of them, in first person and for everyone else watching. - **The community translation pack is now called `handwerk-translations`.** It was `dayofmind-translations`, from back when the mod was named DayOfMind Additions. The old folder stays behind in `resourcepacks/` and can be deleted; it is no longer used. - **The shovel path feature works again on 26.3.** Snapshot 10 turned tool behaviour into a datapack registry, which broke how the mod recognised the shovel. On a 26.3 snapshot older than 10 the feature now switches itself off instead of crashing the game. - **Minecraft's own shovel made a path under a solid block.** On 1.21.x the dirt beneath a grass block flattened anyway, and on 26.3 you could do it standing underneath and aiming upwards. Both follow the vanilla rule again: only with air above, and never from below. - **The lumberjack axe took whole walls apart.** Breaking a single plank in a wooden house followed the connected planks and took twenty-five of them with it. It now follows logs only, the way its tooltip always claimed — crouch while breaking to take everything connected instead. - **A scythe only turned soil into farmland when you aimed at the top of a block.** From the side nothing happened, except on 26.3, where the game's own hoe behaviour quietly stepped in. It now works from every side but the underside, on every version, exactly like a vanilla hoe. - **Two tool tooltips promised something else than the tool does.** The axe claimed to strip logs "in a 3x3 area" and the prospector pickaxe to mine "all ore blocks at once". Both follow the connected blocks instead, as far as the limit in the config allows, and now say so. - **NeoForge: the game crashed after turning a stair into a dirt path.** The conversion went through, then the client went down the moment you stood next to the new block. The path stair asked Minecraft a question it is not allowed to ask on NeoForge; it may now. Fabric was never affected. - **Trapdoors creaked like wood, whatever they were made of.** A deepslate trapdoor swung open on a wooden hinge. They now make the solid clunk Minecraft gives its own stone blocks, pitched to what they are actually made of: stone and brick land heavy, gold and netherite keep the metallic ring of Minecraft's iron trapdoor, and diamond, emerald and amethyst chime above it. Every one of them still opens by hand — no redstone needed. Breaking them and walking on them always sounded right; it was only the hinge that was off. - **Shovels made paths out of blocks a vanilla shovel refuses.** Mud and moss on 1.21.x — and on every version the mod's own mud, moss and mangrove-root stairs and slabs, which went to path while the blocks they are cut from stay put. Vanilla flattens dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, grass, podzol and mycelium and nothing else, so those six and Handwerk's variants of them are what makes a path now — for the plain shovel and for the mod's own tools alike. A variant does what its parent does. **0.16.3 will add a switch** for anyone who wants the wider set back. - **The mod's lanterns and chains now count as lanterns and chains to other mods and data packs.** They sit in `#minecraft:lanterns` and `#minecraft:chains`; Minecraft itself reads neither, but plenty of other things do. - **The name tag recipe is Minecraft's own now.** Handwerk used to add a far dearer one of its own: four string, a sign, a nugget and paper spread across the whole grid. Minecraft has shipped a simple recipe since 26.1.2 — a metal nugget above a sheet of paper — so on those versions the mod's recipe is gone entirely. On 1.21.x, where Minecraft has none, you get that same simple recipe instead of the expensive one. - **The terraformer shovel laid paths you could not see.** Aiming at the underside of a block turned it into a path anyway. Vanilla's shovel refuses to work on a block from below, and now this one does too — including the sneaking version that turns paths back into dirt. - **On 26.3, breaking a shovel in your off hand showed the wrong item breaking.** The animation and the sound belonged to whatever sat in your main hand. What was taken off the durability was always right. - **The vein limit in the config had no bounds at all.** It now sits between 1 and 1024. It is the number of extra blocks a single click may take, and it lands on the server in one tick, so an unbounded value was not a good idea. - **The tooltip on the radius-tool tag left out the harvester scythes**, although they have always been part of it. - **Stairs, slabs and trapdoors of hard materials could be mined with any pickaxe.** An obsidian stair fell to a wooden one and a gold slab to a stone one — and dropped, which the blocks they are made from never do. All fourteen of them now ask for the same tool tier as their material: diamond for obsidian, crying obsidian and netherite, iron for gold, diamond and emerald, stone for iron. - **Magnetism let go of what it was carrying once you moved off.** Drops and experience gave up after 24 blocks and stopped where they were — still reserved for you, so they lay there for nobody. Everything the enchantment gathers now follows you for as long as it exists, however far you have got in the meantime. - **Four item names read like notes, not English.** "Wood Tool Handle" and "Gold Harvester Scythe" are now "Wooden Tool Handle" and "Golden Harvester Scythe", the way Minecraft names its own wooden and golden tools. - **Andesite and blackstone trapdoors could not be crafted.** Their recipe was the same six blocks in two rows that Minecraft uses for the wall of that stone, and the wall won. Twenty-three other stones shared the grid as well and only gave the trapdoor because their recipe happened to be found first. Every trapdoor now takes two columns of three instead — still six blocks, still two trapdoors — and the walls keep their recipe. - **Crying obsidian stairs cried from one side only**, and which side turned with the stair. They shed tears from every side now, like the full block. - **Waxing Handwerk's copper lanterns and chains never counted for "Wax On" or "Wax Off".** Minecraft's two advancements name every block they accept, so only the vanilla lantern and chain counted. Waxing and scraping the mod's copper blocks earns them now too. - **NeoForge: the translation resource pack showed a block of cobblestone** instead of the Handwerk icon in the resource pack list. - **The shovel path toggle in the config described something it does not do.** Its tooltip spoke of switching between grass blocks and dirt paths. What it switches is the shovel turning Handwerk's grass and dirt stairs and slabs into paths, and any path back into dirt while sneaking — and it now says so. ## ⚙️ Technical - **Gradle 9.7.0 → 9.7.1.** Loom 1.17.19, Stonecutter 0.9.7 and Kotlin 2.4.10 are unchanged. - **The 26.3 build targets 26.3-rc-2 now**, up from 26.3-pre-1. Nothing in the mod had to change for it, and the jar keeps loading on every 26.3 from the pre-releases onward — so the release version can simply be added to this file once 26.3 is out. - **26.3**: Fabric API 0.157.1 → 0.160.4 · Trinkets now uses its own 26.3 build (4.2.0) instead of borrowing the 26.2 one - **26.2**: Fabric API 0.155.2 → 0.160.0 · NeoForge 26.2.0.25-beta → 26.2.0.87 · Trinkets 4.1.0-beta.2 → 4.1.0 (out of beta) - **26.1.2**: Fabric API 0.155.2 → 0.155.3 · NeoForge 26.1.2.82 → 26.1.2.109 · Trinkets 4.0.0-beta.3 → 4.0.0 (out of beta) - **1.21.11**: Fabric API 0.141.5 → 0.141.6 ## 🧪 Testing **Played this version and something looked wrong? [Report it here.](https://tally.so/r/2E6qqp)** The form asks for the Minecraft version, the loader and what you did, so it can be reproduced without a round of questions. Reports on any target are welcome — several fixes in this release came out of exactly one such pass.

The old folder stays behind in `resourcepacks/` and can be deleted; it is no longer used. - **The shovel path feature works again on 26.3.** Snapshot 10 turned tool behaviour into a datapack registry, which broke how the mod recognised the shovel.

# Handwerk 0.16.1 — MidnightLib optional, 26.3 snapshots ## ✨ New - **MidnightLib is optional.** It is only needed for the config screen — without it Handwerk runs on its defaults. - **Snapshot builds for Minecraft 26.3**, marked alpha. - **A warning when the installed Ohmega version can lose items put into an accessory slot.** Ohmega 1.6.0-beta.18 is affected in freshly created worlds; leaving and re-entering the world avoids it, and beta.19 fixes it. ## 🩹 Fixes & tweaks - **Sneak + right-click with a shovel turned any block into dirt.** Only paths revert now. This affects every supported version. - Copper lanterns and redstone chains carried a broken serialisation entry. Nothing in normal play used it. ## ⚙️ Technical - **Toolchain**: Gradle 9.7.0, Fabric Loom 1.17.19, Stonecutter 0.9.7. Kotlin stays on 2.4.10. ## 🧪 Testing **I could not test this release thoroughly, and I would rather say so than pretend otherwise.** Only the 26.3 build was played through case by case. On 26.2 (Fabric and NeoForge) and on 1.21.x I started the game and checked the areas I had touched — accessory slots and the Lodestar Charm's magnet — and nothing else. 26.1.2 was built and left at that. This is a matter of time, not of confidence: going through five targets by hand takes longer than I have. The [test protocol](../docs/Handwerk-Test-Protocol.ods) is public and lists every case. If you play Handwerk on 1.21.x, 26.1 or 26.2, findings are very welcome — the shovel bug above came out of exactly one such pass.
