Ardwick

Ardwick is an easy-going survival overhaul for players who miss Minecraft's Golden Age but still wish to experience the modern game. It features slower horizontal progression to prevent the typical two-week phase burnout. A heavy focus has been placed on balancing mechanics and adding to the world's realism without making the game punishing.

The new progression is taught via 70+ new advancements so that you never get stuck.

Atmosphere, Seasons, Weather, and Climate

  • Seasons change the world's ambience and day length.
  • Days are longer (20-40 minutes, depending on season).
  • Solar eclipses occur every 25 days. The orbits of the Sun and Moon have been decoupled.
  • Cold biomes, nights, and winters gradually reduce your body temperature. Stay indoors, underground, or warm up by a fire to restore your vigour.
  • Weather is tied to seasons.
  • Latitudes push colder biomes north and warmer biomes south.

Slower

  • Vigour system balances sprinting and strip mining. Earning XP and mining ore gives you temporary scaling boosts to movement speed, mining speed, and attack damage.
  • Cooking food requires tending your campfire.
  • Smelting raw copper, raw iron, and iron ingots takes longer so that progress requires time management.
  • Beds speed up time rather than skipping it.
  • Injury, armour, shields, the cold, and filled Shulker Boxes (Sacks) slow you down.

Progression

  • Gold < Wood < Copper < Iron < Bronze < Rose Gold < Steel < Netherite.
  • Copper can be smelted in the Mud Kiln (throw Dirt in water to create Mud).
  • Iron is exclusively processed via Bloomeries.
  • Steel is produced by blasting Iron.
  • Alloys of Copper and Tin create Bronze. Alloys of Copper and Gold create Rose Gold.
  • Each tier of armour provides unique stat buffs so that no tier of armour is irrelevant late game.
  • Diamond, Emerald, and Lapis Ore removed. Gold only spawns in the Nether. Flint deposits spawn near the surface. Tin ore spawns near Copper in small quantities.
  • Structures removed (except Ancient Cities, Mineshafts, Nether Fossils, Dungeons, and Desert Wells).
  • Enemies get stronger the deeper you mine.

Death

  • Dying reduces your maximum health by one heart.
  • Restore a lost heart by eating a Golden Apple.
  • keepInventory is on.
  • Minimum maximum health is set by advancements, so you can't run out of health too early in the game.

Food, Cooking, and Farming

  • Hunger is removed. Eating food provides direct health regeneration.
  • Cookies provide speed. Glow Berries and Carrots provide night vision.
  • Wheat dropped in water (including Cauldrons) creates Dough. Dough cooked on a campfire bakes bread.
  • Dough crafted with Sugar and Cocoa Beans creates Cookie Dough, baked creates Cookies.
  • Dough crafted with either Raw Mutton or Beef and Potato creates a Raw Pasty.
  • Pasties provide Haste and increased yield from Tin mining.
  • Crops can be found growing wild.
  • Carrots and Potatoes now have seeds.
  • Carrots can be cooked into Cooked Carrots, gaining +1HP but losing night vision.
  • Flax plants provide a renewable source of String.
  • Small patches of mushrooms can be found in caves. Mushrooms are now edible raw.
  • Animals take longer to mature, and longer between breeding. Animal maturation is linked to the calendar so they mature even when they're in unloaded chunks.
  • Chickens shed their feathers.
  • All Chickens lay regular eggs. When hatched from an egg, the Chicken's variant matches the biome you're in.
  • Rotten Flesh or Feathers in your off-hand acts as fishing bait, speeding up fishing but being consumed on each catch.

Brewing

  • Effects from drinking potions stack so that durations can be extended.
  • Potions stack in your inventory.
  • Both Glowstone and Redstone can be added to the same potion to improve its potency and duration.
  • Potion of Swiftness + Blaze Powder brews Potions of Haste.
  • Awkward Potion + Amethyst Shard brews Bottles o' Vigour.
  • Awkward Potion + Glow Berries brews Potions of Night Vision.
  • Awkward Potion + Feather brews Potions of Feather Falling.
  • Water Bottle + Ghast Tear brews Dragon's Breath (renamed Bottle o' Tears).

Other New Mechanics & Quality of Life Features

  • Lit campfires provide regeneration and set your spawn.
  • No weapon cooldown, similar to pre-1.8 combat.
  • Items spill out on the ground rather than clumping, similar to pre-1.3.1.
  • Music Discs drop as 'Blank Music Disc' which can be crafted into a Music Disc of your choice. Similarly Pottery Sherds and Banner Patterns are craftable.
  • Dropping an Amethyst Shard into a Soul Campfire spawns an Allay.
  • Creating Obsidian risks spawning Blazes that seek to defend their home.
  • Combining an Ender Pearl and Wither Star creates a Pearl of Returning. Using a Pearl of Returning instantly teleports you to your spawn and refunds your Wither Star.
  • Cooking Rotten Flesh turns it into Leather.
  • Cats spawn in more biomes. Variants are biome dependent.
  • Hostile mobs have been balanced by biome.
  • Dropping Amethyst Shards into water creates Prismarine Shards. Prismarine Shards craft 1:1 into Prismarine Crystals.
  • Dropping Amethyst Shards onto Sculk creates Echo Shards.
  • Dropping Dirt into water creates Mud.
  • Dropping Concrete Powder into water creates Concrete.
  • Logs can be stripped in a Stonecutter.
  • Using Shears on an Item Frame turns it invisible.
  • Tree felling with axes.
  • Harvesting crops on farmland with a hoe will auto-replant them.
  • Villager trading has been balanced. Some unobtainable items are made obtainable via trading.
  • Piglin Bartering has been balanced.
  • Nether Portals can be created with sizes as small as 1x1.
  • Glow Ink Sacs have been removed and had their functionality transferred to Glowstone Dust.
  • Lava cannot be held in a bucket.
  • Two fences can be connected with a lead.
  • Mobs that damage the player are tagged so that they never despawn.
  • A Compass not used on a Lodestone always points North.

Enchanting

  • Enchanting removed.
  • Anvil functionality removed.

No End

Installation

Ardwick is a Data Pack + Resource Pack in one file, however for easy installation it is also available as a mod for Fabric, Forge, Neoforge, and Quilt. To install Ardwick as a Data Pack rather than a mod, put a copy of the zip in both your resource pack folder and your world's data pack folder.

Celestial Order Fix is available as an optional Vanilla companion shader to improve the visuals of eclipses added by the data pack.

It is recommended to play Ardwick on a new world.

Licensing

CC0-1.0. Do as you please. Mods/Datapacks/Shaders that are stuck on old versions because they're no longer supported by the Dev but the Dev has placed them under a restrictive licence is a plague. You'll never have that issue here.

Known issues

  • Chickens won't shed feathers directly onto a hopper. Leaving this in to prevent automation.
  • The Sun and stars appear in front the moon (unless you're using the Celestial Order Fix shader pack). This can't be fixed with a datapack alone.
  • Some item conversions don't occur correctly when taken from the creative inventory. This is a low priority to fix as the datapack is designed for survival.
  • Herobrine appears rarely in dimly lit areas or after building his shrine. I'm still working on a fix for this.

Other Recommended/Optional Settings

  • Turn FOV to 90. Armour in Ardwick lowers your speed which lowers your FOV, so pre-increasing your FOV makes the experience feel more vanilla.
  • Disable Mipmap and Chunk Fade in video settings; it makes the game feel more classic.
  • Disable Smooth Lighting.
  • If you prefer the pre-1.14 textures try out the Programmer Art Continuation Project. Make sure to enable the built-in Programmer Art resource pack and place Ardwick above both. Ardwick builds on the modern textures but still works well with Programmer Art.

Ardwick 1.4 introduces throwable spears, reintroduces archaeology, adds seasonal fishing, and greatly balances the heat mechanic added in 1.3.1. ### Features - Spears can be thrown! It's awesome fun. - New flint spear is the earliest weapon in the game. - Heat now peaks at 4pm. Cold peaks at 4am. Brings slightly more realism. - Heat and Cold build/drain at 10x the previous resolution so that their accumulation feels smoother. - Eyes of Ender can now be used to locate Ancient Cities. - Seasonal fishing. More Tropical Fish in Summer, more Salmon in Autumn, more Junk in Winter. - Warm hostile mobs (Husks, Parched) migrate north during Summer. Cold hostile mobs (Strays) migrate south during Winter. - Archaelogy has been readded. Find Suspicious Sand/Gravel in river beds and deserts. ### Balance - Heat has been greatly rebalanced across biomes/seasons and rapidly disappates when leaving a hot environment (like the Nether). Most of this should feel intuitive in game however if you're struggling, Gold and Rose Gold armour cool you down, so does water and standing near soul fire. - Froglights are now cheaper, requiring two glowstone dust, a magma cream, and a dye. - Chainmail armour is now craftable from iron nuggets and ingots. Its cheaper than iron, has lower overall protection, but still specialises in arrow resistance. - Axe damage minorly reduced so that swords remain relevant. - Wooden Sword and Spear recipes removed. The earliest weapon in the game is now the Flint Spear. - Ghast health increased from 10 to 20 - Blaze health increased from 20 to 40 - Endermen and Wither Skeleton health reduced from 100 to 80. - Gear recycling disabled. - Blast furnaces have a new recipe replacing Iron Ingots with Deepslate, and the interior Mud Kiln with a Campfire. - On Easy Difficulty, hostile mobs no longer target the player. - Spears have new durabilities to balance their utility as thrown weapons. ### Fixes - Visual glitch where rapidly draining heat made the vigour bar overlay look like the player was cold. - Tools in the crafting guide now show accurate damage values. - Attack speed now reads as ∞ rather than a ludicrously high number. - Wither Skeletons can now replace Parched, Strays, and Bogged during Eclipses and New Moons. - ~~Removed~~ Herobrine ### Known Issues - None Internal versioning v0.736

1.3's method of blocking vanilla advancements/crafting recipes failed so we're back to the old method. This version also contains a first attempt at adding a heat mechanic as a counterpart to cold. It's rough around the edges and will be balanced fully in 1.4. ### Features - Heat added. The Nether and hot biomes now heat you up. Wear Gold or Rose Gold armour to reduce its effects. Standing near Soul Fire or Soul Campfires also cools you down. ### Balance - Ladder crafting now gives 6 instead of 3. - Four string in a 2x2 crafts cobwebs. - Saddles now craftable with copper ingots. ### Fixes - Method of disabling crafting recipes/advancements reverted. - Lead on fence checks reduced by 5x to improve performance at the cost of appearing a bit janky. - Pearl of Returning tweaks to hopefully work more reliably on multiplayer. - ~~Removed~~ Herobrine ### Known Issues - Heat hasn't been fully playtested so will be balanced in 1.4. Not expecting any major bugs here as I reused the code for cold which has been fully play tested, the balance may just be off. Internal versioning v0.703

**1.3's attempt to clean up disabled advancements/crafting recipes is bugged. I'm leaving this up for archive purposes but marking it as an alpha. Play 1.3.1 which fixes this issue.** Ardwick 1.3 cleans up jank, balances the game further, and adds some new building options. ### Features - Leads can be connected from one fence to another. - Flammable blocks (including TNT) set fire when placed in the Nether. - Campfires and Soul Campfires placed in the Nether auto-light. - Soul Campfire recipe brought in-line with Campfire recipe. - Rotten Flesh or Feathers act as fishing bait when held in the off-hand slot, speeding up fishing but consuming one bait per fish. - Mobs that damage the player are tagged so that they never despawn. - A Compass not used on a Lodestone now always points North. - Glistening Melons are now edible and instantly restore 4HP. - Horse and Nautilus armour now slows down your mount. - Enemies get more dangerous the further you travel down in the world. Zombies and Spiders gain speed, Skeletons gain strength, and Creepers explode quicker. - Totems of Undying can be crafted with 3 Gold Blocks, 2 Gold Ingots, and 2 Emeralds. This locks it behind the Nether, Brewing, and Villagers as a late-game niche item. ### Balance - Raw Carrots healing reduced to 1HP but stack size increased to 16. - Cooked Carrots now stack to 4. - Crossbows get a hidden Quick Charge I and Piercing I enchantment, in addition to their existing hidden Power II enchantment. - Husks now afflict the player with poison instead of hunger since hunger is irrelevant in Ardwick. - Gold Ingots can now be sold to Clerics, Weaponsmiths, Armourers, and Toolsmiths 1:1 with Emeralds. - Golden Apples cost 16 emeralds, down from 18. - Froglights are now craftable from Glowstone, Nether Quartz, Magma Cream, and a relevant dye. Can be redyed later. ### Fixes - "Bottle of Tears" renamed "Bottle o' Tears" - Stack size conversions are now handled gracefully in the inventory. Prevents crafting via shift-clicking from creating impossible stacks that don't get converted with other attributes appropriately. - The Vigour bar no longer overrides the Nautilus bar whilst riding a Nautilus. - Replaced a bunch of disabled recipes with a filter block. This is just a better way to disable recipes and has reduced the pack's size by around ~10%. - Other recipe clean up. - ~~Removed~~ Herobrine ### Known Issues - The happy ghast issue from the last update turned out to be my happy ghast dying to a snowberry bush. - I've inadvertantly broken Advancements and Recipe blocks in this version with what I thought was a good method. New update will be out soon to fix this. Lesson learned, don't fix something that isn't broken. Internal versioning v0.694

Ardwick 1.2 brings the armour system inline with the horizontal progression philosophy. Existing armour is converted on first load so this is safe to drop into an existing world. The armour needs to hit your inventory, so armour stored in chests won't convert until you take it out. ### Features - Each armour tier now has its own niche that exceeds the protection provided by Netherite, so that all tiers remain relevant late game and mixing armour sets becomes a valuable strategy. Don't overlook Leather! - Loosely these are Leather (Cold Resistance), Copper (Poison Resistance), Chain (Arrow Resistance), Iron (Blast Resistance), Bronze (Melee Resistance), Steel (Generalist, No Specific Resistance), Gold/Rose Gold (Heat Resistance), Netherite (Wither Resistance), however some of these stats vary. Check them out in game! - Armour now communicates its niche in the crafting table/recipe book so that you can preview its value before committing to crafting. - Proper English language support. No longer a mix of US/British English, set your dialect in the settings menu and advancements/item names will update appropriately. - Lava can no longer be picked up by buckets in Survival. - Armour stats are communicated as stats rather than enchantments. It reads more like an RPG and less like an NBT tag system. - Renamed 'Granite' 'Porphyry' since every Cornishman knows that Pink Granite isn't real Granite. ### Balance - Reworked armour speed penalties inline with the new tier niches to keep all armour relevant. Gold and Netherite are very heavy, use them wisely. ### Fixes - Sleeping in beds no longer sets your spawn point. Campfires now exclusively set your spawn. - Firework and Firework Star recipes appear again. - Recipes for the Tin Ingot and Pearl of Returning added (these were an oversight). - Cleaned up some recipes that were identical to Vanilla that the pack redefined. - ~~Removed~~ Herobrine ### Known Issues - I'm actively investigating an issue related to Happy Ghasts disappearing as they grow up. It's unclear whether this is a data pack issue or a Vanilla issue currently. Internal verisoning v0.658

A stated aim of the pack is balanced horizontal over vertical progression to create gameplay remniscent of the Golden Age **with modern features**, so this update brings the Shulker Box (now called Sack) and Elytra (now called Glider) in-line with this philosophy. Also, we added the Blank Music Discs in 1.0 one day before Mojang added them to Bedrock, that's crazy timing. ### Features - The Shulker Box (now called 'Sack') can be crafted from 8 Leather + a Chest but every slot occupied within a Sack in your inventory reduces your movement speed by 0.4pp, up to a limit of 40pp. This brings the functionality of Shulker Boxes to the early game whilst balancing them fairly. - The Elytra (now called 'Glider') can be crafted from 3 Sticks + 5 Paper however it can no longer be boosted by rockets. - Endstone and Purpur crafting recipes removed. The Chorus Fruit is still obtainable via trading but its only use is teleportation fun. - The Heavy Core crafting recipe has been removed for now but is likely to return soon. Just need to figure out how to bring it into our progression system in a balanced and fun way. - Torchflowers and Pitcher Plants can now rarely be found growing in the wild, similar to other crops (but rarer). - New recipe for turning slabs back into whole blocks. ### Balance - Ender chests now break into 8 obsidian even when broken with Silk Touch. This is to prevent an easy work around of the Sack/Shulker Box movement speed penalty. - Ghast tear Cleric trade now costs 2 emeralds. - Dragon's Breath is now brewable from Water Bottle(s) + Ghast Tear. - Phantom Membranes no longer craftable. They come from Cat gifts and trading and their only use is brewing Potions of Slow Falling. - Rockets have been reverted to their Vanilla recipes. No blaze powder required. - End Crystals no longer craftable. - The Bundle no longer requires Copper to craft. - Sniffer Egg has been removed from the Desert Well Archaeology loot table as the flowers can now be found in the wild. Sniffer eggs will likely be reintroduced later, perhaps once the Sift comes out. The Snort Sherd can now be crafted with a Moss Block instead. - Feathers are now dropped by burning Husks, Drowned, and Zombie Villagers for consistency with Zombies. - Hoppers, Furnace, and TNT minecarts now drop a Minecart + their block when broken for consistency with nostalgia and Chest Minecarts. ### Fixes - Removed Silk Touch from the Rose Gold Spear as its a useless enchant on a spear. - Striking flints can no longer light small Nether portals. - Villager trades no longer ask for impossible stack sizes. - Miscellaneous other small changes to improve performance/remove redundant functions/improve efficacy of existing functions. - ~~Removed~~ Herobrine ### Known issues - Possible issue with eggs not spawning the correct variety of chicken. More investigation needed. Internal versioning v0.632
