🌬️ TradeWinds

TradeWinds is a sea-trading game mode for BentoBox: an endless, procedurally generated ocean scattered with NPC trading islands. Your players start with nothing but a rowing boat and a pocketful of coal—and the boat is their cargo hold. Buy low at a farming island, sell high at an industrial port, and watch the money roll in… or take the shortcut through smuggling, bounty hunting, and piracy, and deal with what follows.

If you ever lost a weekend to Elite or TradeWars 2002, this is that feeling, rebuilt in Minecraft. If you didn't—your players are about to find out why you would have.

🧭 Why players get hooked

  • 🏝️ An endless seeded ocean world. Every island's position, type, tech level, security band, biome, and name derives from a single seed. Players can explore and find novel locations. Use the default seed or pick a new one to have a unique world. Share your seed and another server gets the exact same world.
  • ⛵ The boat IS the hold. Cargo lives in the ship, the ship can be upgraded through 20 hull ranks (Bamboo Raft → Pale Oak Chest Boat), and losing the ship means something. One player, one boat—every hull decision matters.
  • 📈 A market worth reading. Eight island personalities (farms, mines, fisheries, forests, industry, luxury, frozen ports…) each buy and sell differently, and every trade nudges local prices. The good routes are discovered, not posted.
  • ⚡ Two ways to travel, both fair. Rowing is free, slow, and takes you through lawless water, but potential riches. Warping is instant but burns fuel from the hold—and a 5% misjump drops you into the Interstice, a hostile nether sea where the wart, the blaze rods, and the wither watchtowers are. Neither way ever strictly beats the other; that tension is the game.
  • 🗺️ Charts, stars, and rank. Raising the chart floats a hologram compass of everything you've charted. Every island charted by players climbs the Seafarer ladder—19 ranks from Deck Hand to Mythic Mariner, with a built-in top-ten leaderboard and placeholders for your scoreboard.
  • 🏠 An island of your own—earned. Reach Tide Captain (36 islands charted) and carry serious coin, and any wild islet you find can become yours: protection, team, home point, a members-only warp node, and night-sky navigation home by the stars. First come, first claimed.
  • 🚨 Crime that pays you into danger. Contraband only sells where the law is thin; a criminal record locks you out of safe markets and puts a bounty on your head that other players can lawfully collect. The richest smugglers are structurally pushed toward the dangerous edge of the map—where the pirates already are.
  • 🐡 A sea that pushes back. Guardian pickets by day, drowned raiders by night, phantoms, deep terrors, boat-borne pirate crews, sea witches—scaled by how lawless the water is. Even the safe lanes get the occasional puffer shoal, just to keep the helmsman awake.

Difficulty is geography. The waters near spawn are patrolled and calm—new and younger players can trade in peace. Danger, contraband, and PvP bounty space are all somewhere else, and going there is always a choice. That makes TradeWinds one of the few economy games that works for a family server and a cut-throat one at the same time, from the same config.

⚓ How a session feels

You cast off from the spawn port with three slots of cargo and a hunch: the fishing village two islands east was paying double for wheat. You row the first leg—fuel is money—and chart a new islet on the way, one more notch toward Tide Captain. At the border curtain the warp dialog offers the crossing for 14 units of coal; you take it, because the sun is setting and drowned raiders own the night out here. The market pays out, the hold refills with cheap cod, and on the chart home you notice a red-banded island you've never dared visit is buying fish at silly prices. It would only take one quiet run…

That loop—plan, sail, trade, risk a little more than last time—is the whole game, and it does not let go.

> 🧪 **This is a pre-release.** It exists so that the reporter of [#7](https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/issues/7) and anyone else running a non-English server can try the translation work before 0.3.0 goes out for real. The build to test is **TradeWinds-0.3.0-SNAPSHOT-b28.jar** from Jenkins: https://ci.codemc.io/job/BentoBoxWorld/job/TradeWinds/28/artifact/target/TradeWinds-0.3.0-SNAPSHOT-b28.jar (built from develop at `eca09a5`, 633 tests green). Please report anything that still shows up in English, or reads wrong in Chinese, on #7. ## 🎁 What's new TradeWinds speaks your players' language now. Most of the locale could already be translated, but three things could not: the names of goods, fuel and hulls in the market and the hold, the names of the ports themselves, and a handful of words that reached players straight from the code. A Chinese server owner reported all of it in [#7](https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/issues/7), and this release closes it. The clever part costs translators nothing. Wherever an item is named in a dialog, a menu or a hologram, the **player's own client** now translates it, in every language Minecraft ships. Port names are procedural, so no locale can list them, but every name is built from a few dozen syllables, and a locale can list *those*: a Chinese locale turns "Lave" into 莱维 for every Chinese-speaking sailor, consistently, while the chart, the logs and the admin commands keep the English name the island is known by. A complete **Simplified Chinese locale** ships with the addon. This release also rolls in 0.2.1, which was never published: sugar cane is contraband, because one cane crafts into one sugar and the customs scan was theatre for anyone who had read a recipe book. ## ✨ Highlights ### 🔡 Goods, fuel and hulls in the player's own language (#8) - Every item name a player sees used to be the material's enum name prettified, "Oak Log", which no locale could touch. - In dialogs, the hold GUI, holograms and boss bars the client now renders the item in its own language, with no translation work at all. Enchantment names on the secondhand shelf too. - Plain chat cannot be translated by the client, so chat lines fall back to English unless the locale has a line for that item. `en-US.yml` now lists every traded material under `materials:`, blank on purpose: fill a line to name the item yourself, everywhere, including chat. - The boat item's own name and lore, and the name floating over a hull, are written in the owner's language rather than the server's. ### 🔡 Port names a locale can transliterate (#8) - A port name is two to four syllables from a fixed table. The new `name-token:` section lists all 31, and a locale writes each in its own script. - The English name stays the island's identity: the island registry, the residents' tags, the logs and `/twadmin` commands all keep it. Only what a player reads changes. - The star chart draws the transliterated name only when the map font can. It is an ASCII bitmap, so a Chinese locale sees Chinese names everywhere except the chart, which keeps the English ones. - The spawn port, the one island with a given name, is named by `spawn.name`. ### 🔡 Simplified Chinese (#8) - `zh-CN.yml` ships with the addon: every key, all 164 material names using the official Minecraft Chinese names, transliterated port syllables, 出生港 for the spawn port. ### 🔡 The last English words out of the code (#8) - Island type read as the raw enum, `AGRICULTURAL`, in the market subtitle, warp tooltips, holograms and the chart. Three places still used a hardcoded English band name months after `band.*` existed. `/tw prices` printed the category enum. All come from the locale now, under `type:`, `band:` and `category:`. ### ⚙️ 🔺 Sugar cane is contraband (#6) - One cane crafts into one sugar, so a hold full of cane walked through a customs scan clean and became contraband on the far side with a single click. - `SUGAR_CANE` joins `SUGAR` in `illegal-trade.contraband-materials`. Farm ports no longer stock cane over the counter, scans catch it in the hold and in pockets, and the black-market premium applies to it. - The rule for when the list grows next: list the feedstock as well as the finished good. ### ⚙️ Customs stamp paperwork removed (#6) - Customs stamping went with the hold rework in 0.2.0, but `economy.unstamped-sellables` stayed in `config.yml` promising behaviour that did not exist. It is deleted, along with the unused `item.stamp` locale line and the buying page's mention of stamps. ### 🐛 Also - Hold tooltips break into lines. The border pane's instruction was one clipped sentence in every language; lore strings now split on newlines, the same convention BentoBox's own panels use. (#8) - A player-given item name is escaped before it reaches a dialog. A sword named `<red>` used to restyle the sell page. (#8) - The dash and question-mark placeholders for missing prices and unknown names come from the locale. (#8) ## ⚙️ Compatibility ✔️ BentoBox API 3.18.0+ ✔️ Paper 26.1 – 26.2 (26.2 is what it is playtested on) ✔️ Java 25 ✔️ Vault and an economy plugin (required) ## 🔺 Updating — important notes ⚙️ **Add sugar cane to your contraband list by hand.** BentoBox *replaces* list settings from `config.yml` rather than merging them, so a server that already has a config keeps its old list and never sees the new default. Add `SUGAR_CANE` under `illegal-trade.contraband-materials`, or delete `config.yml` and let it regenerate. `economy.unstamped-sellables` can be deleted from an existing config; nothing has read it since 0.2.0. 🔡 **Locale files: 217 new keys, three reworded.** BentoBox adds keys that are missing from an existing locale file on load, so the new `type:`, `category:`, `name-token:`, `materials:`, `spawn.name`, `item.boat-name` and `general.none` / `general.unknown` lines arrive by themselves. It does **not** replace a value that already exists, so three reworded lines keep their old text until you delete the file or edit them: `hold.border-lore` and `hold.tnt-lore` (now several lines, each with its own colour tags) and `ui.market.buying-body` (no longer mentions customs stamps). If you keep a customised locale, the cleanest route is to delete the server copy and let the shipped one regenerate, then re-apply your edits. 🔡 **Chinese players.** The `zh-CN.yml` that ships is selected the way BentoBox selects any locale: the player's chosen language (`/tw language zh-CN`) or the server's `default-language` in BentoBox's own config. Leave the `materials:` lines blank in a locale of your own and the client translates item names itself; fill them to override. 🔺 **No world or database changes.** The hold, boat and ocean models are untouched, and every port keeps the name it has. Boats already in a player's pack pick up the localized name and lore the next time they are stamped, which happens when they are picked up or their hold is opened. ## 📥 How to update 1. Take backups of your server, for safety 2. Stop the server 3. Drop this jar in your addons folder and delete the old one 4. Add `SUGAR_CANE` to `illegal-trade.contraband-materials` in `config.yml` (or delete the config to regenerate it) 5. Delete or edit your locale files as described above 6. Restart the server 7. You should be good to go! ## Legend * 🔡 locale files may need to be regenerated or updated * ⚙️ config options have been removed, renamed, or added * 🔺 special attention needed ## What's Changed * 🔡 Names in the player's own language: goods, ports, types and bands (#7) by @tastybento in https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/pull/8 * ⚙️ 🔺 Open 0.2.1, and make the feedstock as illegal as the good by @tastybento in https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/pull/6 **Full Changelog**: https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/compare/0.2.0...0.3.0

## 🎁 What's new Two playtests' worth of boat bugs, and the ocean finally has somewhere to sleep. The headline fix is one rule applied properly: **a boat is an identity, not a plank of wood.** Two places matched your ship by its material rather than its record, which meant a hull belonging to somebody else could be broken up, or launched in place of your own. Alongside that, a hold could change hands in complete silence, `/tw chart` could not tell you where your old boat was, and one pickup path could hand you the same boat twice. New this release: **port inns**. This is an ocean, a bed needs a floor that isn't moving, and until you claimed an islet there was nowhere to put one — so luxury, farm and forest ports now keep a room with a made bed you can actually sleep in. Farm ports sell the wool to make your own, each with its own colour. And pale oak — the wood the two best hulls are built from — turned out to have no price and no fuel value at all, so it was unsellable and unburnable everywhere. This release also rolls in everything from 0.1.1, which was never published. ## ✨ Highlights ### 🔺 A boat is an identity, not a plank of wood (#4) - Crafting a bigger boat broke up the **first hull of the old boat's wood** it found in your pack. Carrying a hull you had fished out of the sea? That was the one that went. - The spawn auto-launch had the same bug: it consumed whatever hull matched the type and launched *your* record out of it. - Both now match the boat's record id. A hull stamped with somebody else's record is never touched; an unstamped hull of the right type is a last resort, so legacy and hand-given boats still work. ### 🔡 A hold never changes hands in silence (#4) - Picking up a hull you own makes it your hold again — and demotes whatever you were sailing (the respawn loaner, say) to an unowned OLD BOAT. That whole transaction used to happen without a word. - New messages say which boat is your hold now and what became of the other. ### 🔺 No more double hulls from a pickup (#4) - Claiming an unowned hull with no boat of your own removed the ground item and handed you a stamped copy — but never cancelled the pickup, and the server delivers the stack it captured regardless. You ended up with two items sharing one hold. ### 🔡 `/tw chart` answers "where is my old boat?" (#4) - The hologram compass deliberately skips a boat you are carrying or standing next to, so at a quay it drew nothing at all and you could not tell "no old boat" from "the marker didn't draw". - Bare `/tw chart` now sends the two text bearings as well as raising the holograms. ### ⚙️ Port inns — somewhere to sleep (#4) - Ports whose type is listed in the new `ocean.inn-island-types` (LUXURY, AGRICULTURAL, FOREST by default) build a room off the plaza with a lantern and a made bed. - Sleeping works normally, and the bed becomes your respawn point. - **Only affects plazas that have not generated yet** — ports you have already visited keep their bedless plazas. ### ⚙️ Farm ports outfit a home (#4) - White wool, cooked beef and mutton over the outfitter counter, plus **one dyed colour per port** — seeded from the island, so the same port always sells the same wool and hunting a particular colour gives you somewhere to sail to. - Wool is outfitter stock, not cargo, on purpose: trader-bought cargo can only leave the hold by sale or destruction, so wool bought as cargo could never become a bed. ### ⚙️ Pale oak is worth something (#4) - `PALE_OAK_LOG` and `MANGROVE_LOG` had no base price, and pale oak had no fuel value either. The wood the Pale Oak Boat and Pale Oak Chest Boat are built from could not be sold at any counter or burned in any hold. - The 15 dyed wools also had no prices: most dyes come from flowers, which have no price of their own, so the recipe-derived value came out at zero and no colour was tradeable. ### 🔺🔡 The respawn loaner is your boat (#3, previously drafted as 0.1.1) - Die, respawn at the port, and the harbourmaster hands you a Bamboo Raft — but if your own ship was still out there, that raft arrived **unowned**, and trade transacts against your *active* boat. Every trader turned you away with "no ship at this quay" until you placed the raft and climbed into it. - The loaner is now yours and active the moment it is handed over, and your previous ship becomes your OLD BOAT: still on your chart, cargo still aboard, still yours to row back out and reclaim. - A keepInventory death lends you nothing — with the real boat still in your pack, a loaner would have demoted the ship you were holding, cargo and all. ### 🐛 Also - Releases publish themselves to Modrinth, CurseForge and Hangar when a GitHub release goes out (#3). ## ⚙️ Compatibility ✔️ BentoBox API 3.18.0+ ✔️ Paper 26.1 – 26.2 (26.2 is what it is playtested on) ✔️ Java 25 ✔️ Vault and an economy plugin (required) ## 🔺 Updating — important notes 🔺 **Your existing `config.yml` will not pick these up on its own.** BentoBox *replaces* map and list settings from `config.yml` rather than merging them, so a server that already has a config keeps its old tables and never sees the new values. Either delete `config.yml` and let it regenerate, or add by hand: - `economy.base-prices`: `PALE_OAK_LOG: 25.0`, `MANGROVE_LOG: 18.0`, and the 15 dyed wools at `24.0` - `travel.fuel-values`: `PALE_OAK_LOG: 1.0` - `ocean.inn-island-types`: `[LUXURY, AGRICULTURAL, FOREST]` (a missing list means no inns anywhere) 🔡 **Locale keys.** `tradewinds.boat.own-aboard` and `tradewinds.boat.own-resumed` are new, and `tradewinds.boat.respawn-given` was reworded with `tradewinds.boat.respawn-given-replacing` added. If you keep a customised locale file, add the new keys — otherwise players see the raw key. 🔺 **Inns only appear in new plazas.** Island decoration runs when a plaza's chunk first generates, so ports you have already sailed to will not grow a bed. Sail somewhere new, or regenerate the world, to see one. 🔺 **The ship you leave behind is unowned sooner.** Because the loaner takes over as your active boat, the ship you left behind is demoted to an unowned OLD BOAT at the moment you respawn rather than when you board the raft. Unowned boats can be claimed by whoever finds them first. ## 📥 How to update 1. Take backups of your server, for safety 2. Stop the server 3. Drop this jar in your addons folder and delete the old one 4. Update `config.yml` as described above (or delete it to regenerate) 5. Restart the server 6. You should be good to go! No world or database changes — the hold, boat and ocean models are untouched, so existing oceans and boats carry over as they are. ## Legend * 🔡 locale files may need to be regenerated or updated * ⚙️ config options have been removed, renamed, or added * 🔺 special attention needed ## What's Changed * 🔺🔡⚙️ A boat is an identity, not a plank of wood - and ports have inns now by @tastybento in https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/pull/4 * 🔺🔡 The respawn loaner is your boat, not a hull in your pocket by @tastybento in https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/pull/3 * Publish releases to Modrinth, CurseForge and Hangar by @tastybento in https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/pull/3 **Full Changelog**: https://github.com/BentoBoxWorld/TradeWinds/compare/0.1.0...0.2.0

The first release of **TradeWinds**, a sea-trading game mode for BentoBox. An endless, procedurally generated ocean scattered with NPC trading islands: you start with a rowing boat and a pocketful of coal, and the boat **is** your cargo hold. Buy low, sell high — honestly, or otherwise — and answer for it at customs. If you ever lost a weekend to *Elite* or *TradeWars 2002*, this is that feeling, rebuilt in Minecraft. ## Highlights 🏝️ **An endless seeded ocean.** Every island's position, economy, tech level, security band, biome and name derives from a single number — `ocean.seed`. Share the seed and another server gets the same world. The spawn island's biome is the one direct aesthetic knob (`ocean.spawn-island-biome`). ⛵ **The boat IS the hold.** One player, one boat, twenty hull ranks from Bamboo Raft to Pale Oak Chest Boat. Cargo lives in the ship; losing the ship means something. Boats can be traded in, bought outright, captured, stolen at anchor in lawless water — and every lifecycle event is written to an admin logbook, with `/twadmin boat <player> [restore]` for the day someone asks where theirs went. 📈 **A market worth reading.** Eight island personalities buy and sell differently; every trade drifts the local price; whole-coin rounding never lets the spread close. Enchanted, renamed and worn goods are priced as the individual items they are, and notable goods resurface on neighbouring ports' secondhand shelves. ⚡ **Two ways to travel, both fair.** Rowing is free and charts everything you pass. Warping burns hold-carried fuel at the island border — and a small misjump chance drops you into the **Interstice**, a hostile nether sea that became a destination: nether wart shoals, blaze pickets, wither watchtowers, and a ship graveyard glowing with soul flames over nether-tier loot. Re-engaging the warp out is always free. 🚨 **Crime pays you into danger.** Reputation bands, customs scans, contraband that only sells where the law is thin, fines to come clean, police that never drop loot, and bounties collectible where fugitives are forced to trade. 🎖️ **Progression that reads like a sea story.** Chart islands to climb the 19-rank Seafarer ladder, then claim a wild islet of your own at Tide Captain: protection, team, a members-only warp node, and a course home you can steer by the stars. ## Requirements | | | |---|---| | Server | Paper 26.2+ | | BentoBox | 3.18.0+ | | Java | 25 | | Economy | Vault + any Vault economy (required) | ## Install **Requires Vault and an Economy - InvSwitcher can be one** Drop the jar in `plugins/BentoBox/addons/`, start the server, and the ocean generates itself. Set `ocean.seed` in `config.yml` before players join if you want to pick your world. Full documentation: https://docs.bentobox.world/en/latest/gamemodes/TradeWinds/ ## Notes - Deliberately no End world, ever.
