The Backrooms Update

Some floors aren't as solid as they look.

A standalone NeoForge mod that folds an endless liminal dimension into Minecraft — rooms that go on forever, something that hunts you in the dark, and a very long way down. No other mods required. Built entirely from vanilla blocks and textures, so it stays light and looks right alongside your shaders and resource packs.

Whole Hole

Getting In

Nothing's wrong with your world yet. You have to make the first crack yourself.

Build an iron frame: a four‑block iron column up each side, with a single iron block at the top‑middle and another at the bottom‑middle. Hang an iron door in the gap and give it power — a lever, a button, any redstone, touched anywhere on the door or the frame. The doorway lights a soft, humming yellow. Step through.

From the moment that first portal opens, the world stops being safe. Thin spots begin to surface across the overworld — patches of ground that look exactly like the floor around them but hold no weight. Walk over one and you're simply gone, dropped into The Complex. The portal runs both ways and raises a twin on the far side, so the way home is always behind you. If you can find it again.

Threshold Portal

The descent

The Complex is sixty‑four floors stacked into the dark, sorted into themed stretches that shift from world to world:

Backrooms — the ones everybody remembers. Yellow walls, damp carpet, the endless buzz of the lights.

Poolrooms — pale quartz tile and still, shallow water that never seems to end.

Grasslands — wide green fields and real trees under a flat blue "sky" that isn't one.

Now and then a shaft opens and drops you a floor lower. Once in a long while the ground gives out entirely and a pit swallows ten floors at once. The further you sink, the darker it gets — except the grass, which stays bright and only grows lonelier. And there is no bottom: fall through the lowest floor and you come back in at the top, seamlessly. The descent doesn't end. It just continues.

What's down there with you

The Lifeform.

One hunter, and it is patient. It keeps its distance, watching, until something in it decides — and then it runs you down. Hold your gaze on it too long and it tears open into black and is gone, only to be standing somewhere you aren't.

Lifeform

Still Lifes.

The dimension's failed attempts to copy the people who've passed through. They wear faces you might know. Hit one and it gives up the act — drops a bowl of mushroom stew, goes still, and stays that way forever.

Still Life

Glitched landmarks

Buried in the rooms are ruined miniatures of places you've been: village houses, igloos, shipwrecks, ruined portals, end‑city towers, bastion halls, woodland mansions, ancient‑city ruins, fossils and more — built from their real materials, then hollowed through with holes, sculk and cracked stone. Familiar, and wrong.

Your builds follow you down

Everything you've raised in the overworld is waiting in The Complex at the same coordinates — sunken into the floor, decayed, misremembered. The deeper its echo sits, the less of it survived.

Misremembered

A few things worth knowing

Furnished rooms hide chests. Most hold food; a rare few hold the iron and the door to build your way back out from the inside. Fire won't spread or destroy here. The Complex itself can't be broken — only the blocks you place can. Ops & creative: /backrooms locatepoi, /backrooms tppoi, /backrooms thinspot. Requirements

Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge 21.1.0+ · Java 21 · No dependencies · Works client and server.

Mind the thin spots.

# The Backrooms Update — 2.0.0 A community-feedback update, and the biggest one yet — portals rebuilt from scratch, a material that lets you cut The Complex open, and for the first time a way to take your world back from it. **Heads up before you update:** portals no longer use an iron door, and a lever alone no longer lights one. Any portal built on 1.3.0 or earlier won't relight — tear it down and build a new frame. Worlds, inventories and everything else carry over fine. ### Added Memarium — a mirror-bright alloy that exists nowhere in your world. Not in your caves, not in the Nether, nowhere you can dig. Only in The Complex, seaming the growths in the walls and standing in for the stone in every structure it misremembered. It never saw real ore, so it made its own. Memarium tools — a smithing table, a diamond tool, a Memarium ingot and the torn Remembered Upgrade schematic you'll find in the ruined structures. They're the only thing that can break The Complex's blocks. They're also a key, not an upgrade: The Complex gives nothing back when you cut it, and the alloy is wrong for other worlds — outside The Complex it cuts at a fraction of its speed and wears out several times faster. It will not replace your netherite. The Memory Anchor — four blocks of Memarium, four of redstone and an echo shard. It's a full-strength redstone source in its own right, which is exactly what a portal needs. Wire one to a lit portal and the breach comes under control: no new thin spots form anywhere, and every thin spot already out there reverts — not to a hole in the ground, but to the block it ate. Ground you've never visited repairs itself the moment it loads. Break the wire and it all stops. The Recollection — ring a lit portal with four anchors instead, and the fourth closes it for good. The anchors are consumed, the portal collapses, and that frame will never light again until it's torn down and rebuilt. A config file, at last — `config/backrooms-server.toml`, per-world via `<world>/serverconfig/`. If your players spend more time in the Backrooms than out of it, `thinSpots.spreadChancePerChunk` is the dial (try 0.005 instead of 0.08), or `enabled = false` to switch them off entirely and keep the portals. Portals, the Lifeform, Still Lifes and the insanity effect all have their own toggles. Every default matches the old behaviour, so nothing changes unless you change it. The descent runs both ways — cut your way up through the highest ceiling and you come back in at the bottom, the same way falling through the lowest floor already brings you back to the top. ### Changed Portals are any shape you like — the frame is no longer a fixed pattern. Build an iron border of any size, from a 1×2 doorway up to something you could drive a minecart through, cross-shaped or arched or whatever you want. The only rule is that the border must be unbroken iron, corners included. Portals need real power — a full-strength redstone signal on any part of the frame, corners included. A redstone block will do it. Dust that's run a long way won't. And a portal is a switch now: cut the power and it closes, restore it and it opens again. Portals open like they mean it — light gathers along the inside edge of the opening and thickens, the tone climbs, the aperture stutters as it tries to catch, and then it takes, with a boom. Stepping in takes you across immediately — no more standing in the doorway waiting. The old dwell is still there as a config value if you preferred it. The Complex's growths and corrupted structures now seam Memarium instead of sculk. The Lifeform and the Still Lifes have more to say — every sound now rolls between three to five variants, all still built from pitched-down vanilla audio. The insanity and sanity effect icons have been redrawn as a matched pair — sanity radiates outward from a bright core, insanity creeps inward as dark veins. `/backrooms breach` has been removed. It set the flag correctly but scattered thin spots up to 320 blocks away into chunks that mostly weren't loaded, so it looked broken every time anyone ran it. ### Fixed The Lifeform's sound layering endlessly — its horn re-fired every single tick, twenty overlapping roars a second, because a player who had died but not yet respawned still passed its target search while failing its "is this a valid target" check. It also now notices when another mod vetoes its targeting, instead of retrying forever. "Spawns me in the void and never loads" — several causes, all real. The check that waited for the destination chunk was testing the chunk's ticket level rather than whether it had actually generated, and the code added its own ticket right before checking, so it always passed instantly. Thin-spot entry didn't wait at all. Falling below the world teleported you back to the top unconditionally, so a chunk that hadn't generated became a permanent, invisible, endless fall. And the loading screen was suppressed, so there was no "Downloading terrain" and no timeout. Freezing when entering The Complex — chunk generation was writing about 86,000 redundant heightmap updates per chunk and placing solid planes of light blocks, up to 2,200 light sources per chunk through a single-threaded light engine. Both are gone; lighting is on a grid now, with no visible difference. Thin spots that wouldn't go away — the cleanup was guessing where they were from the surface heightmap and only checking three blocks around it, so any thin spot on a ledge or under an overhang was silently skipped. It now reads the exact list the chunk already keeps. Roughly fifty other bugs found across three adversarial review passes — portals that could be left half-lit, gateways that stopped responding after a server restart, a Memory Anchor that could be born permanently dead, an ignition that could resume against an unloaded world, and a lot of smaller edges. ### Notes Memarium is only found inside The Complex, and you can't mine it at first — the dimension is unbreakable, so your first ingot and the Remembered Upgrade schematic have to come out of the chests in the ruined structures. Same shape as finding ancient debris before you can work it. Existing worlds are fine, but The Complex's chunks won't regenerate. If you're coming from a version before the height change, start a new world. # The Backrooms Update — 1.3.0 A community-feedback update — multiplayer is fixed, it plays nicely with other world-generation mods, and there are new ways for The Complex to get under your skin. ### Added The way home isn't guaranteed — crossing into The Complex now has a chance to build your return portal blown apart. You land safe beside it, but you'll have to repair or rebuild to leave. The chance scales with difficulty (rare on Easy, ~1-in-4 on Normal, ~2-in-5 on Hard). Difficulty-scaled loot — Easy keeps a full pantry and escape gear is common; Normal is unchanged; Hard is genuinely barren (fewer chests, thin food, scarce gear, some turn up empty). Shifting walls — very rarely, leave a part of The Complex and come back and its interior has quietly rearranged itself. Never while you're watching, never touches your builds or the landmarks, at most once a day per area — just often enough to make you doubt your map. ### Changed Still Lifes come apart a piece at a time — instead of one hit dropping a single stew, each punch or right-click now tears off a limb (a bowl of mushroom stew each, and the body shrinks) until there's nothing left and it collapses. Direct hits only — no farming them from range. ### Fixed Multiplayer portal crash — crossing a portal while another player was on the server could crash it (or freeze the world). Co-op portals work now. "Falling into the void forever" with terrain mods — The Complex no longer breaks with Tectonic, Continents, Deeper Oceans. If it ever still fails to load right, it sends you back to the overworld with a warning instead of dropping you into an endless void. Sable compatibility — The Backrooms now coexists with Sable. Per-player memory leak on long-running servers (crossing/insanity state is cleared on logout). ### Notes The multiplayer, terrain-mod (Tectonic / Continents / Deeper Oceans) and Sable fixes were all tested directly. The terrain-mod fix applies to newly generated Complex chunks, so start a new world or explore fresh area for it. # The Backrooms Update — 1.2.0 A quick update focused on a new sanity system, working nether-style portals, smarter entities, and a lot of atmosphere and bug fixes. ### Added Insanity / sanity system — the longer you stay, the more your mind frays, shown as a row of bubbles that pop one by one: 5 left → creeping black-vein screen overlay fades in 4 left → pounding heartbeat (faster as it worsens) 3 left → blindness 2 left → nausea 0 left → The Complex teleports you around (never into walls/suffocation) Two recoveries: step out to the overworld briefly to fully clear it, or shelter in a room/POI. ~90-second grace before insanity starts after entering. Potion of Insanity  & Potion of Sanity — regular/splash/lingering, found in room loot. Spawn eggs for the Still Life and the Lifeform. Nether-style warp animation for threshold portals. ### Changed Portals work like nether portals — overworld portal builds a matching one at the exact same spot in The Complex, paired so you return to the one you left from. Portals are breakable (gateway or frame, including inside The Complex). Still Lifes spawn a bit more and (in MP) can wear any visitor's real skin. Food less rare — more stocked chests, plus bread/cooked food. Poolroom ambience — soft underwater bed + varied dripping; grass is now silent; backrooms keep the hum + distant bangs. ### Fixed Portals are reliable now Return portal no longer corrupted by overworld-build mirroring. Lifeform keeps hunting after you die and no longer gets stuck. Thin spots & mirrored builds now appear in already-explored areas, not just new chunks. Crash/freeze hardening around dimension crossings and chunk loading. ### Notes Start a new world for the best experience. Requires NeoForge for MC 1.21.1 (Java 21).
