Simplex Trimmer

Safe, focused world trimming for Paper — with Java menus, optional Bedrock forms and startup-only maintenance

Simplex Trimmer 12.1.2 is a standalone world-maintenance plugin for Paper servers. It lets administrators select individual dimensions, choose an InhabitedTime threshold, schedule a maintenance countdown, run MCA Selector during the next full server startup, and review how much disk space was reclaimed afterward.

No SimplexAdminSuite dependency. No built-in telemetry. Java inventory menus included. Optional native Bedrock forms through Floodgate.

⚠️ This plugin permanently deletes selected chunk data. Always create a complete, usable backup before trimming.

🛡️ Startup-only trimming

SimplexTrimmer 12 replaces the old live-world maintenance approach with a safer startup workflow:

  1. Open /trimworld and select the dimensions you want to process.
  2. Choose an activity threshold and maintenance countdown.
  3. Confirm that you already have a complete backup.
  4. SimplexTrimmer stores a one-shot maintenance job.
  5. The plugin requests a normal server stop/restart.
  6. On the next full startup, the queued trim runs before normal world loading continues.
  7. MCA Selector processes the selected targets locally.
  8. When maintenance finishes, normal startup continues and the result is written to history.

The default STOP mode is intended for hosting panels. Your panel must start the server again after shutdown. Optional RESTART mode delegates to Spigot's configured restart mechanism.

If Bukkit does not begin a normal shutdown within the configured timeout, SimplexTrimmer prints a clear SERVER STOP REQUIRED message so you know to stop the server manually. The queued job remains saved for the next full startup.

📊 Live MCA Selector console progress

During startup trimming, SimplexTrimmer captures MCA Selector's terminal progress and converts it into clean English server-console messages.

Progress lines can include:

  • Active world or dimension
  • Percentage complete
  • Current/maximum region counter when available
  • Current .mca region file when available
  • Reclaimed disk space after a target finishes
  • Elapsed time

Example:

[MCA Selector 1/3] world | 12% | 24/200 regions | r.-3.2.mca
[MCA Selector 1/3] world | 42% | 84/200 regions | r.-2.5.mca
[MCA Selector 1/3] world | 100% | 200/200 regions | r.4.3.mca
[Trim 1/3] Completed | world | Reclaimed: 6.81 GiB | Elapsed: 2m 14s

Repeated terminal redraws are suppressed so your console stays readable. The full raw MCA Selector output is still stored in plugins/SimplexTrimmer/data-v12/logs/ for troubleshooting.

✨ Features

  • Standalone plugin: focused only on world trimming and maintenance.
  • English interface: Java menus, Bedrock forms, command feedback, console messages, default maintenance messages and documentation are all English.
  • Java inventory GUI: configure targets, thresholds, countdowns, confirmations and history without editing files manually.
  • Optional Bedrock GUI: native Floodgate/Cumulus forms for Bedrock players; Floodgate is not required for Java-only servers.
  • Per-dimension targeting: Overworld, Nether, End and discovered custom dimensions can be selected separately.
  • Legacy + modern world discovery: supports classic region, DIM-1, DIM1, split Bukkit worlds and namespaced dimensions/<namespace>/<dimension> layouts.
  • Explicit MCA Selector paths: terrain, POI and entity directories are supplied separately when available.
  • Safer path handling: automatic discovery rejects unsafe symbolic-link targets and skips common backup/archive locations.
  • Additional world roots: explicitly add offline/custom roots with world-trimmer.additional-world-roots.
  • Persistent administrator sessions: selected dimensions and settings survive normal usage.
  • Persistent maintenance jobs: queued and archived jobs are stored under data-v12/.
  • Recovery mode: failed/interrupted jobs require administrator review instead of being treated as successful.
  • History: keeps before/after sizes, reclaimed space, status and per-target information.
  • World locking: prevents destructive processing of worlds that are genuinely locked by another process.
  • Process supervision: an external guard supervises the MCA Selector child process and prevents duplicate trimmer guards.
  • Preflight validation: checks targets, MCA Selector state, Java compatibility and available disk space before maintenance begins.
  • Verified MCA Selector updater: downloads from the official Querz/mcaselector GitHub release and verifies the published SHA-256 digest before installation.
  • Configurable performance: dedicated MCA Selector heap, process-thread cap and timeout.
  • Countdown controls: immediate, 1-minute, 3-minute and 5-minute starts with public warnings, titles, sounds and cancellation.
  • No built-in telemetry: no bStats module, Discord integration or world upload service.

🎮 Java + Bedrock administration

Java players use the inventory interface automatically.

When Floodgate is installed and a Floodgate player opens SimplexTrimmer, the plugin can use native Bedrock forms for:

  • Dimension selection
  • Threshold/settings controls
  • Backup confirmation
  • Maintenance start confirmation
  • History
  • Countdown cancellation
  • Recovery actions

Geyser/Floodgate must be installed and configured separately. SimplexTrimmer does not bundle either project.

⏱️ Activity thresholds

SimplexTrimmer removes chunks based on Minecraft's accumulated InhabitedTime value.

PresetTicksNotes
30 seconds600Lowest preset, still potentially destructive
1 minute1,200More chunks become eligible
3 minutes3,600Aggressive
5 minutes6,000Very aggressive
10 minutes12,000Extremely aggressive

Custom values are available with:

/trimworld ticks <20-1728000>

The filter is strictly:

InhabitedTime < threshold

Chunks with InhabitedTime exactly equal to the configured threshold are retained.

InhabitedTime is not a building or claim detector. A rarely visited base, pasted structure, claim, spawn area or newly built location can still have a low value.

🔒 Safety & recovery

SimplexTrimmer uses world/session locks during startup maintenance. Paper may already hold a world's session.lock inside the same JVM during early startup; current releases recognize that protected same-process state correctly while still rejecting a lock owned by another process.

If a trim is interrupted or fails after destructive work may have started, SimplexTrimmer enters recovery mode. Normal players are blocked until an administrator reviews the job.

There is no automatic rollback. Always inspect the raw logs and restore your backup if necessary before releasing recovery.

The only automatic retry exception is the specifically recognized preflight-only session.lock failure produced by SimplexTrimmer 12.1.0, and only when no trim target had started.

⚠️ Read before trimming

  • Make a complete backup before every trim.
  • SimplexTrimmer confirms that you say a backup exists; it does not create or validate that backup.
  • Do not force-stop the server or MCA Selector while destructive processing is active.
  • If a run fails, earlier dimensions may already have been modified.
  • Deleted chunks can regenerate later when players revisit them.
  • Regenerated terrain can differ after Minecraft updates, datapack changes or generator changes.
  • There is no automatic Lands, WorldGuard, GriefPrevention, claim, spawn or building protection.
  • Disk-space savings depend entirely on your world and selected threshold. No percentage is guaranteed.

✅ Requirements & compatibility

  • Server: Paper or a compatible Paper-derived server with the required Bukkit/Paper APIs.
  • MCA Selector: version 2.9 or newer for the current workflow.
  • Java for MCA Selector 2.9: Java 21 or newer.
  • Plugin bytecode: Java 17 target; your Minecraft/Paper server may require a newer Java version, which takes precedence.
  • Floodgate: optional; only required for native Bedrock forms.
  • Geyser: optional and installed separately when Bedrock players connect to the Java server.

Not supported as trimming targets:

  • Folia
  • Fabric
  • Forge
  • Proxy-only environments
  • Native Bedrock LevelDB worlds

Bedrock players are supported through a Java Paper server using Geyser/Floodgate; SimplexTrimmer does not edit native Bedrock world databases.

🚀 Quick start

  1. Stop the server and create a complete backup.
  2. Remove older SimplexTrimmer JARs.
  3. Install SimplexTrimmer-12.1.2.jar.
  4. Start the server normally.
  5. Run /trimworld as OP or with trimmer.admin.
  6. Use Update MCA Selector to install/verify the official tool.
  7. Select the dimensions you want to process.
  8. Choose the InhabitedTime threshold and countdown.
  9. Confirm that your backup exists.
  10. Start maintenance.
  11. Allow the server to stop normally.
  12. Let your hosting panel/restart script start it again, or start it manually if required.
  13. Watch the live trim progress in the server console during startup.
  14. Review the final result in SimplexTrimmer history.

Do not use /reload as a substitute for a full maintenance restart.

🔧 Configuration & data

Version 12 operational data is stored under:

plugins/SimplexTrimmer/data-v12/

This includes the MCA Selector tool state, queued/archived jobs, logs, history, sessions and runtime state.

Existing v11 state is not automatically migrated into data-v12/. Bukkit also keeps an existing config.yml when you update the plugin, so newly introduced options use their built-in defaults until you add them to your configuration.

Useful configuration options include:

world-trimmer:
  restart-mode: STOP
  shutdown-warning-seconds: 30
  default-threshold-ticks: 600
  minimum-threshold-ticks: 20
  history-limit: 100
  additional-world-roots: []
  performance:
    heap: 2G
    process-threads: 2
    timeout-minutes: 120
  preflight:
    minimum-free-space-gib: 2

🔄 Upgrading from SimplexTrimmer 11.x

The supplied legacy 11.0-ULTIMATE build used a different workflow: it entered maintenance while the server was already running, kicked players, disabled autosave, saved/unloaded chunks, executed MCA Selector and then attempted a server restart.

Version 12.1.2 intentionally replaces that design with queued, startup-only processing, persistent job state, stronger path/lock validation, recovery handling and a supervised external MCA Selector process.

When upgrading:

  • Remove the old JAR.
  • Keep your backup.
  • Do not copy old runtime/state files into data-v12/.
  • Reinstall/update MCA Selector through the new interface.
  • If you also use a SimplexAdminSuite build containing its own trimmer module, disable the duplicate trimmer there.

Credits & external tool

World editing is performed locally by MCA Selector, created by Querz and contributors:

https://github.com/Querz/mcaselector

MCA Selector is downloaded separately from its official GitHub release and is not bundled in SimplexTrimmer.

Your Minecraft world data is processed locally on your server and is not uploaded by SimplexTrimmer to an external trimming service.

# SimplexTrimmer 12.1.2 ### Major v11 rewrite, safer startup trimming, live MCA Selector progress & cleaner shutdown handling SimplexTrimmer 12.1.2 is the current standalone release and a major redesign compared with the supplied **11.0-ULTIMATE** build. > **Important:** This is a destructive world-maintenance tool. Make a complete, usable backup before every trim. The plugin does not create or verify backups for you. --- ## 🚀 Major changes from 11.0-ULTIMATE - Replaced the old live-server trimming workflow with **startup-only trimming**. - The legacy build kicked players, disabled world autosave, saved/unloaded chunks, ran MCA Selector, and then attempted a restart. - Version 12 stores a one-shot maintenance job, shuts the server down normally, and performs destructive world edits during the next full startup **before normal world loading continues**. - Added persistent v12 operational storage under `plugins/SimplexTrimmer/data-v12/`. - Added persistent job state, archived jobs, per-target raw MCA Selector logs, administrator sessions and up to the configured number of history entries. - Added **recovery mode** for failed or interrupted jobs instead of silently continuing as if everything completed successfully. - Added world/session locking and an external **ProcessGuard** supervisor to reduce the risk of another process touching the same world while MCA Selector is running. - Added legacy, split-Bukkit and modern namespaced dimension discovery. - Added individual dimension targeting instead of treating every discovered `region` folder as one generic world operation. - Added explicit terrain, POI and entity paths for MCA Selector. - Added path validation and rejection of unsafe symbolic-link targets during automatic discovery. - Added configurable extra world roots through `world-trimmer.additional-world-roots`. - Added disk-space preflight checks, MCA Selector runtime/version checks and subprocess timeouts. - Added a configurable MCA Selector heap and process-thread limit. - Reworked the MCA Selector updater: - Uses the official `Querz/mcaselector` GitHub release. - Verifies the GitHub-published **SHA-256 digest** before installing the tool. - Installs the download atomically instead of directly replacing the active tool while it is still being downloaded. - Removed the old built-in **bStats telemetry** path. SimplexTrimmer 12.1.2 contains no telemetry module. --- ## 🎮 Interface & administration - The complete SimplexTrimmer interface is now **English**: - Java inventory menus - Native Bedrock/Floodgate forms - Command feedback - Default maintenance messages - Console output - Bundled documentation - Added optional native Bedrock forms through Floodgate while keeping Floodgate fully optional for Java-only servers. - Added paginated dimension and history interfaces. - Added persistent per-administrator selections and settings. - Added `/trimworld` administration commands for scanning, updating MCA Selector, history, status, custom thresholds, cancellation, clearing selections, recovery and configuration reloads. - Existing `trimmer.admin` permission remains the primary administration permission and defaults to OP. - Added aliases `/simplextrimmer` and `/strimmer`. --- ## ⏱️ Thresholds, countdowns & maintenance flow - Preset thresholds remain available for 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes and 10 minutes of `InhabitedTime`. - Custom thresholds can be set with: - `/trimworld ticks <20-1728000>` - The deletion filter remains strictly: - `InhabitedTime < threshold` - Chunks equal to the selected threshold are retained. - Added immediate, 1-minute, 3-minute and 5-minute maintenance starts. - Added public countdown messages, title overlays, sounds and countdown cancellation. - Backup confirmation expires and is invalidated when relevant settings change or the server restarts. --- ## 🔒 12.1.1 — Paper STARTUP lock fix - Fixed startup trimming failing with: - `Could not acquire the world lock exclusively` - Paper may already own `session.lock` in the same JVM when a `STARTUP` plugin runs. This is now recognized as the expected protected state instead of being treated as an external lock failure. - Truly external world locks are still rejected. - Locks acquired by SimplexTrimmer are kept for the complete destructive phase. - ProcessGuard can continue supervising the MCA Selector child process and world-lock state if the parent process changes state. - Added a dedicated guard lock to prevent duplicate trimmer supervisors from running at the same time. - Jobs that failed in 12.1.0 from this exact **preflight-only** lock bug can be safely retried automatically when no target had started and no active guard remains. --- ## 📊 12.1.2 — Live console progress - Added live MCA Selector progress reporting to the Paper/server console. - Console progress can show: - Active world/dimension - Percentage - Current/maximum region count when available - Current `.mca` region filename when available - MCA Selector's carriage-return progress bar is normalized into clean one-line English console messages. - Duplicate redraws are suppressed so the console does not get flooded by identical progress lines. - A heartbeat/status line is emitted after a quiet period when MCA Selector is still working without a new visible percentage update. - Full, unmodified MCA Selector output continues to be stored in the per-target log files under `data-v12/logs/` for troubleshooting. - Target completion output now includes reclaimed space and elapsed time. Example console output: ```text [MCA Selector 1/3] world | 12% | 24/200 regions | r.-3.2.mca [MCA Selector 1/3] world | 42% | 84/200 regions | r.-2.5.mca [MCA Selector 1/3] world | 100% | 200/200 regions | r.4.3.mca [Trim 1/3] Completed | world | Reclaimed: 6.81 GiB | Elapsed: 2m 14s ``` --- ## 🛑 12.1.2 — Manual-stop fallback - Added a shutdown/restart watchdog. - After a maintenance job is safely queued, SimplexTrimmer requests the configured normal server stop/restart. - If Bukkit has **not begun normal plugin shutdown** within `world-trimmer.shutdown-warning-seconds` (default: 30 seconds), the console prints a clear English warning: ```text SERVER STOP REQUIRED The server could not be stopped automatically. Please stop it manually from your hosting panel or server console. The trim job is already saved and will start automatically on the next full server startup. ``` - The watchdog is daemon-only and cannot keep an otherwise successful JVM shutdown alive. - If normal Bukkit shutdown has already started, the warning is not emitted just because saving a large server takes longer. --- ## 🧰 Commands | Command | Purpose | | :--- | :--- | | `/trimworld` | Open the automatic Java/Bedrock administration menu | | `/trimworld java` | Force the Java inventory menu | | `/trimworld scan` | Rescan dimensions and sizes | | `/trimworld update` | Download and verify the latest supported official MCA Selector release | | `/trimworld ticks <20-1728000>` | Set a custom `InhabitedTime` threshold | | `/trimworld clear` | Clear the current administrator's dimension selection | | `/trimworld history` | Open saved trim history | | `/trimworld status` | Show the current maintenance state; console supported | | `/trimworld cancel` | Cancel an active countdown before shutdown | | `/trimworld recovery CONFIRM` | Release recovery after manual inspection | | `/trimworld reload` | Reload configuration while the trimmer is idle | **Permission:** `trimmer.admin` — defaults to OP. --- ## ⚠️ Upgrade notes - Stop the server completely before replacing the plugin JAR. - Remove the old SimplexTrimmer JAR before installing `SimplexTrimmer-12.1.2.jar`. - Keep a full backup of all worlds and plugin data. - Existing v11 operational state is **not migrated** into `data-v12/`. - Bukkit preserves an existing `config.yml`; newly added settings therefore use current defaults unless you copy them into your configuration manually. - Reinstall/update MCA Selector from the new SimplexTrimmer interface after upgrading from old v11 data. - If SimplexAdminSuite also contains an integrated world trimmer, disable that module so two trimmers cannot manage the same worlds. - The default `STOP` mode is recommended for hosting panels. Your panel must start the server again after the stop. `RESTART` delegates to Spigot's configured restart mechanism. - Allow a long enough startup/health-check timeout. Large worlds can require significant time to trim. - Never force-kill MCA Selector during a destructive run unless you are prepared to inspect/restore the affected world from backup. --- ## ⚠️ Important limitations - `InhabitedTime` is accumulated chunk activity. It is **not** a claim, building, spawn or importance detector. - There is no automatic Lands, WorldGuard, GriefPrevention or other claim-system protection. - The plugin does not create backups and cannot guarantee a specific amount of reclaimed disk space. - A failed run may be partially completed if earlier targets were already processed. Review the logs and restore your backup when necessary. - Native Bedrock LevelDB worlds are not supported. Bedrock players can use the plugin menus on a Java server through Geyser/Floodgate. - Folia, Fabric, Forge and proxy-only environments are not supported as trimming targets. - MCA Selector is a separate external tool and is not bundled inside SimplexTrimmer. --- ## 🔧 Compatibility notes - **Loader:** Paper / Paper-derived Bukkit servers where the required APIs are available. - **MCA Selector:** 2.9 or newer is required by the current workflow. - **MCA Selector 2.9:** requires Java 21 or newer. - The SimplexTrimmer plugin classes are compiled to Java 17 bytecode, but the Java requirement of your Paper server takes precedence. - Floodgate is optional and only required for native Bedrock forms. --- ## Credits World editing is performed locally by **MCA Selector**, developed by Querz and contributors: https://github.com/Querz/mcaselector SimplexTrimmer does not upload your world data to an external trimming service.

Simplex Trimmer Effortless World Optimization for Modern Servers. Simplex Trimmer is the ultimate administrative utility designed to reclaim disk space by intelligently removing unused chunks. Powered by the industry-standard MCASelector technology, it allows you to trim gigabytes of data from your world files directly in-game via a user-friendly GUI. ⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: READ BEFORE USE BACKUPS ARE MANDATORY This plugin permanently deletes chunk data. Once a chunk is trimmed, it is gone forever and will be regenerated to its original seed state if visited again. Always create a full backup of your world folders before running this tool. Do not stop the server once the process has started. The server will restart automatically upon completion. ⚡ Key Features GUI-Based Management: No complex command-line arguments needed. Control everything via a clean inventory interface. Smart Filtering: Uses Minecraft's native InhabitedTime to distinguish between active player bases and temporary flyover terrain. Massive Space Savings: Drastically reduces world folder size (often by 40-70%). Visual Reports: Get a detailed chat report showing exactly how many MB were saved after the restart. Safety Lock: Includes a mandatory chat confirmation and kicks players during the operation to prevent data corruption. Expert Mode: Allows power users to define custom tick thresholds for precision trimming. ✅ Compatibility Simplex Trimmer is built for modern Minecraft server software. Paper: ✅ Highly Recommended (1.21+) Purpur: ✅ Fully Supported Pufferfish: ✅ Fully Supported Spigot: ⚠️ Not recommended (Missing libraries) Folia: ❌ Not Compatible (Threading issues) Velocity/Bungee: ❌ Not Compatible (Proxies have no worlds) 📖 How It Works Minecraft tracks how long players spend in a chunk using a value called InhabitedTime (measured in ticks). Simplex Trimmer scans your region files and deletes chunks where the InhabitedTime is lower than your selected threshold. Recommended Thresholds 30 Seconds (600 Ticks) Safe. Removes chunks generated by Elytra flyovers. Keeps almost everything else. 1 Minute (1200 Ticks) Balanced. Good for removing paths traveled briefly. 5 Minutes (6000 Ticks) Aggressive. Removes areas where players haven't stopped to build or mine. 10 Minutes (12000 Ticks) Very Aggressive. Only keeps established bases. 🛠️ Usage Guide Permission: Ensure you are OP or have the trimmer.admin permission. Open Menu: Type /trimworld. Select Worlds: Click the icons of the worlds you wish to optimize. They will glow when selected. Choose Filter: Click the Clock icon to select a time threshold (default is 30s). Execute: Click the Emerald Block ("Start Optimization"). Confirm: Type CONFIRM in the chat when prompted. Wait: The server will enter maintenance mode, kick all players, perform the trim, and auto-restart. 📜 Commands & Permissions /trimworld — Permission: trimmer.admin Opens the main trimmer GUI. ⚙️ Configuration The plugin works out of the box, but you can configure messages and memory usage. <details> <summary>Click to view default config.yml</summary> trimmer-heap: "4G" metrics: true messages: prefix: "§8[§bTrimmer§8] §7" download-start: "§eDownloading optimization tool..." download-success: "§aTool ready." backup-warning: "§e§lBACKUP RECOMMENDATION\n§7It is highly recommended to create a backup first." </details> ⚖️ Privacy & External Tools 1. MCASelector (Core) To perform the heavy lifting of editing region files safely, this plugin automatically downloads and utilizes the open-source MCASelector tool (JAR) by Querz. Behavior: The tool is downloaded to plugins/SimplexTrimmer/ on the first run. Privacy: It runs locally as a subprocess. No world data is uploaded to any cloud server. 2. bStats This plugin collects anonymous usage data to help us improve development. Data: Server version, Java version, and player count. Opt-out: You can disable this in plugins/bStats/config.yml.
