LATEST VERSION - 1.3.1

Inspired by the TV series FROM, Morrowless is a dark horror-adventure mod built to make Minecraft survival feel dangerous, unfamiliar, and worth exploring again.

When night falls, the world stops behaving the way you remember. New creatures start roaming, each with its own way of hunting you. Strange structures show up far from safety, forgotten records hint at things that were never meant to be understood, and some encounters are a lot more dangerous than they first look.

Morrowless isn't about throwing stronger mobs at you — it's built around tension, exploration, atmosphere, and discovery.

It expands Survival, it doesn't replace it You can still build, mine, explore, visit villages, and progress through the game the normal way — the world just isn't quite as safe or predictable as you remember it.

Most of what Morrowless adds is meant to be found naturally while you're playing: creatures roaming the world, unfamiliar locations turning up far from home, records surfacing while you explore, and encounters that ask for a bit more than just swinging a sword.

You're not supposed to understand everything you run into right away. Some places are dangerous, some are useful, and a few won't make sense until much later. Not every strange place is hostile, and not every discovery explains itself — figuring out what the world has turned into is part of the fun.

What Morrowless adds

Original hostile creatures — unique appearances, behaviors, attacks, animations, and sound design

Major boss encounters — their own mechanics, phases, visual effects, arenas, and rewards

New structures and locations scattered across the world, from abandoned underground sites to settlements and stranger landmarks

Exploration-driven lore, told through recovered documents, journals, and environmental clues

A persistent Journal to collect and revisit everything you've uncovered

New weapons, materials, items, and rewards tied to exploration and dangerous encounters

Custom world generation that gives you reasons to leave familiar territory

Dark ambient audio and atmosphere — nights, caves, forests, and isolated places feel a lot less comfortable

Systems built to blend naturally into vanilla villages, loot, mobs, and Survival progression

Some of these things will find you before you find them.

The Creatures

The creatures in Morrowless are meant to feel nothing like ordinary Minecraft mobs. Each one has its own appearance, behavior, attacks, animations, and sounds, and each puts pressure on the player in a different way — some chase relentlessly, some try to control space, and others act in ways that aren't obvious at first.

I've deliberately avoided spelling out how every creature works. Figuring out how something hunts, attacks, or reacts is meant to happen through actually running into it.

Places worth finding

Catacombs — large underground ruins with hostile encounters, loot, and pieces of the world's history. Not the friendliest place to walk into unprepared.

Lake Settlements — isolated settlements built around remote lakes, holding supplies, records, and encounters tied to their surroundings.

Talisman Huts — small, uncommon shelters tied to one of Morrowless' most useful survival mechanics. Worth checking out whenever you spot one.

Veilbloom Trees — rare, unmistakable landmarks that clearly matter more than an ordinary tree. What they actually do is better discovered in-game.

You might also stumble onto Morrowless lore and items inside vanilla locations — so even a regular village can occasionally hint that something in the world has changed.

Talismans One of the most useful things you can find is a Talisman. They can be picked up through exploration and certain locations, or crafted, and once placed they create a protected space against a lot of the creatures roaming outside.

They won't make Survival completely safe, though — creatures can still linger nearby, react to you, or make it pretty clear they know you're there. Finding shelter and actually being safe aren't quite the same thing.

Lore & Journal While exploring you'll come across journals, reports, records, and warnings left behind by people who ran into this world before you. You can read them on the spot or keep them in your persistent Journal, slowly building an archive of everything you've found.

None of the lore is required reading, but if you pay attention, you'll start piecing together how the creatures, locations, and events connect.

Updates

Morrowless is still growing: new gear, stranger things lurking in the dark, and more reasons to head out and explore. Here's what changed in each release, newest first.

1.3.1 — Equipment, Exploration & Combat

Released October 27, 2026

New equipment, inventory improvements, another location to explore, and tougher boss encounters.

Equipment & Quality of Life

  • Baubles. Collectible accessories with unique effects, including keepsakes from Morrowless monsters. New equipment slots with backpack integration.
  • Veilforged Armor. A stronger upgrade for Veil Hide Armor, crafted using Veilforged Steel made from Veil Hide and Iron Ingots. Features a redesigned metallic appearance.
  • MultiTool. Combines pickaxe, axe, and shovel functionality into a single tool.
  • Steel Barricades. An iron-based alternative to Plank Barricades, with three times the durability.
  • Inventory Sorting. New sorting options for player inventories, chests, and shulker boxes.

Exploration & Combat

  • Weeping Lake. A new large structure to discover while exploring the world.
  • Boss Rebalance. The Pale Widow and Drowned Scarecrow now have doubled base health and movement speed. The Scarecrow also gains Resistance I during Phase 2.
  • Lore Pages. Increased discovery chances in vanilla structures.

Fixes & Improvements

  • Fixed missing Bauble particle textures.
  • Updated documentation and command references.

1.2.1 — Traces in the Open - Hotfix

Small signs that someone was here before you — abandoned shelters, forgotten campsites, and remnants of things better left unexplained.

This patch makes Morrowless’s environmental scenes easier to encounter while exploring open terrain.

Environmental Vignettes

  • More opportunities for discovery: increased scene frequency and reduced candidate spacing to make environmental scenes less sparse.
  • Open-terrain generation: all six scene families now generate exclusively in plains and sunflower plains.
  • Improved placement recovery: scenes can try nearby positions when the original location is unsuitable, while preserving terrain-support, obstruction, and structure-collision checks.
  • The same discoveries, better distributed: existing scene templates, loot, and all six families are preserved.

World Generation Notes

These changes apply to newly generated chunks. Existing successful scenes remain, while previously explored areas and processed empty locations are not repopulated.

Discovery still varies by seed and terrain. Individual scene types can remain distant, and /locate may point to a start where placement was rejected.

1.2.0: Equipment, Shelter & Atmosphere

Released October 13, 2026

This update gives you more ways to prepare for the trip, shore up your shelter, and pick up on the quieter signs that something's off.

Equipment & Shelter

  • Six backpack tiers. More room to carry things, with equipment controls in the inventory sidebar and a visible backpack model while you wear it. Contents persist, and if you die, your bag stays where you fell so you can go back for it.
  • Plank Barricades. Reinforce your shelter with barricades that keep their damage between attacks. Monsters can wear them down and break through, so check on your defenses.
  • Veil Hide armor. A new set of survival gear. Veil Fray and Veil Hide now drop from monsters too.
  • Ancient Shardstone. A new decorative light block for your builds.
  • Recipe notifications. New crafting discoveries now show up with vanilla-style recipe toasts.
  • Boss gear repairs. The Drowned Scythe and Widow's Veil can now be repaired at an anvil. The Veil also got durability and refillable uses.

Atmosphere & Discovery

  • Monster keepsakes. Regular Morrowless monsters now have keepsakes of their own, each with its own little presentation.
  • Whispering Forests. The forests feel more wrong now: unsettling animal behavior, a new atmosphere, and small scenes to stumble across.
  • Faded Witness. More polish to how you discover it and how it appears.
  • Catacombs. Further tweaks to how the underground structures generate.
  • Veil Dawn. Subtle changes to the atmosphere around sunrise.

1.1.0: World Events & Monster Overhauls

Released September 15, 2026

A big content and polish update that expands world events, atmospheric encounters, monster behavior, and exploration.

World Events & Atmosphere

  • Road Loop Anomaly. A strange event that makes familiar paths feel a lot less trustworthy.
  • Veil Marks. Mysterious symbols that show up across the world and inside some structures.
  • Night Bell. A new nighttime event with several bell variants and special behavior.
  • More Veil activity. Additional atmospheric events, better presentation, and audio polish.
  • Improved Veil Fog. Refinements to the fog event and how hostile the world gets inside it.
  • Haunting improvements. More polish and behavior tweaks for the Faded Witness and related haunting systems.
  • Quieter approaches. Regular Morrowless monsters can now sneak at times, so you can't always predict when they're coming.

Monsters, Structures & Polish

  • Cheerleader overhaul. Big visual and gameplay changes, with better behavior and presentation.
  • Cowboy improvements. Visual and gameplay refinements.
  • Nurse overhaul. A major visual update that keeps her original identity and glowing eyes.
  • Structures and exploration. Reworked loot distribution, Catacomb generation, structure balance, and world generation.
  • Audio and visual polish. Better atmospheric audio, sound balancing, and more refinements to animation, presentation, and consistency.
  • Bug fixes. Fixes across monsters, structures, world events, and atmospheric systems.

1.0.0: Initial Release

Released August 30, 2026

The first public release of Morrowless, laying the groundwork for its horror-adventure survival experience.

  • Original hostile creatures, each with its own combat behavior, animations, and audio.
  • Major boss encounters with their own mechanics and rewards.
  • Catacombs, Lake Settlements, Talisman Huts, and Veilbloom Trees, plus other places to explore.
  • Talismans and protected-space mechanics.
  • Lore documents and a persistent Journal for keeping track of what you find.
  • Custom weapons, items, materials, loot, ambient audio, visual effects, and world-generation features.
  • Survival integration: Morrowless content is woven into normal exploration, villages, and loot.

Shader Compatibility Notice

Some atmospheric effects in Morrowless, such as Veil Fog, may not render correctly when using shaders.

Certain shader packs can override Minecraft’s default fog and rendering systems, causing some visual events to appear differently, become less noticeable, or not display at all.

Note: This is a visual compatibility limitation and does not necessarily indicate a bug with the mod.

About the development

Morrowless is a solo project built with the help of ChatGPT for the coding side. I started this without any programming background, and used AI-assisted development to turn my ideas, designs, and gameplay goals into an actual working mod.

Everything else — the direction, feature design, balancing, testing, and the final calls on what makes it into the game — comes from a lot of hands-on iteration and in-game testing on my end.

Morrowless is very much a work in progress, and I'm planning to keep expanding it based on my own ideas and on feedback from players.

Current support Minecraft: 1.21.1 Mod Loader: NeoForge Environment: Singleplayer / Survival

Still actively in development — bug reports, feedback, and suggestions are always welcome in the CurseForge comments.

Survive the night. Follow the clues. See what waits beyond the Veil.
