# Frens 1.1.297: better navigation, death retrieval and safer nights
Everything since 1.1.230. For Minecraft 1.21.11. Bots find their way better, fetch your lost items, keep their tools and spend the night more safely.
> ⚠️ **The AI chat and voice features are still in beta.** Everything below works without them. **Questions, bugs and feedback: join the [Frens Discord](https://discord.gg/ceRM6YdMvg).**
## Navigation and following
- **A new pathfinder is the default.** The Unified Pathfinder plans routes that bots can really walk.
- **Bots handle blocked paths like a player.** When stuck, a bot walks around, wades shallow water, breaks soft blocks or places one dirt step. It only digs or builds during its own task.
- **Following under trees.** A bot clears the leaves in its way, steps down and up under a canopy, and gets up a leafy step.
- **Doorways and walls.** A following bot lines up with an open doorway before stepping through, and small steps no longer clip it into a wall.
- **Out of trouble.** A bot in a flooded pocket carves a ledge and climbs out, and a guarding bot wedged in a hole gets itself out.
- **The End exit.** A bot that walks into the End exit portal comes back on its own.
- **Fewer stuck loops.** A bot stuck in a hole stops repeating the same move and tells you once.
- **Back home at sunset.** The sunset return uses shorter routes it can actually walk.
## Woodcutting
- **Bots share a forest.** Each bot claims its own tree, so several bots no longer queue on one trunk.
- **Faster and steadier in dense forests.** Bots pick their next tree in about a second, finish the tree they started and stay in the forest.
- **Bots keep their axe**, and look in nearby chests for one before punching trees by hand.
- **Tidier cleanup.** Bots leave the soil under a felled tree, never dig another tree's soil or another bot's pillar, and never swing a weapon at leaves.
- **Unreachable trees are skipped** quickly, and no shears are used on leaves, so saplings and sticks still drop.
- **Spawn trees, if you allow them.** With "Cut trees in the Spawn base" on, a bot climbs on its own scaffold to fell a whole tree there and removes every block it placed. It still never digs or builds anything else near spawn.
## Night shelters
- **New wall-off shelter.** A bot can seal itself under a natural overhang and open it at dawn.
- **Dirt before cobblestone.** Without a pickaxe, bots seal with dirt or sand, which they can remove by hand.
- **Shelters survive a reload**, and dig-down shelters are always capped and climbed out of at dawn, with the pit filled in.
- **Your house stays intact.** A bot that logs back in inside your house no longer digs out through the roof or a wall, even in a hillside house, as long as its door opens to the outside.
## Death retrieval
- **`/bot retrieve <bot> [me|<dead bot>]`** or the Retrieve Drops button sends a bot to where you or another bot died. It picks up only the items from that death, then comes back to you.
- **A bot's task stops when it dies.** It asks whether to carry on, and no longer reports a finished job after it died.
## Combat, leads and companions
- **Bots with a bow help defend each other**, step aside for a clear shot and hold fire when a friend is in the way.
- **A bot shot from range pauses its task** to fight or flee, then carries on. A miner fights what it can handle and works past the rest.
- **Bots call out big fights** and apologise if they hit you.
- **`/bot leash release [bot]`** and a Release Leads button make a bot drop every lead it holds and forget the animal.
- **Food.** Hungry bots can eat from a chest as long as 8 of that food stays in it, food packed in bundles counts, and a bot never throws a valuable stack away to make room.
- **Spells work with Questing off.** The Spells key, the spellbook and resurrection work in any world.
- **Souls for new companions.** The AI setup asks once whether new companions should get a soul when the AI is ready, and remembers your answer.
## Bases, saves and multiplayer
- **Non-op owners can use the Frens buttons and screens** for their own bots on a server or LAN. The world host can use admin tools like zones, lock mode and base resizing without being op.
- **Unowned bots are no longer open to anyone.** Only ops and the host can control them, and a button that doesn't reach the bot it shows is refused instead of acting on another bot.
- **Private chats stay private.** What you say to your bots in a private group chat is not shared with other players' bots when someone joins.
- **`/bot base owner <base> <player|server|none>`** lets ops and the host set who owns a base. Zone owners can rename and delete their own zones.
- **Each save keeps its own data:** zones, locked blocks, bases, World Mode, roster, furnaces, beehives, crafting and hunt history, hunt settings, fortifications and villages. An existing save picks up its old data on its first start, and admins can recover data after moving or renaming an instance with `/bot legacy-state`.
## Fixes
- Saving settings no longer disconnects you when the settings file is large.
- `/bot place` onto snow works in one command, and snow or carpet in a bot's way is mined like a player would, dropping its item.
- Lodestone fast travel works when nobody is near the lodestone, and the sunset return finds you at any distance.
- `/bot craft <item> [amount] <bot>` crafts with the bot you name, and a failed craft says one line.
- Honey collecting works, and fishing bots cook their cod and salmon.
- A bot fast travelling when you quit the world still arrives.
- Bots chat in turn instead of over each other, and describe damage and tasks in words.
- Shorter, clearer messages. A few lines that never had a recorded voice now show as text instead of a silent pause.
- Screens fit at large GUI scales and small windows, and a new player now meets their first companion instead of a Restore screen.
- The download is smaller, about 32 MB instead of 53 MB.
## Before you update
- **The Unified Pathfinder becomes the default when you update.** To go back, use `/bot config pathfinder baritone`, or turn off "Unified Pathfinder" in Admin settings.
- **The old pre-Soul AI chat is gone.** Soul Chat is the chat. The "LLM World (legacy)" and "LLM Chat (this bot)" toggles, `/bot llm` and `/bot send_message_to` are removed, and `/configMan` now opens Bot Controls.
- **Trees around the world spawn are protected again by default.** An admin can allow it under Admin, World Settings, "Cut trees in the Spawn base".
- **New worlds start in Admin mode.** Questing is off unless an admin runs `/bot config questingMode on`. Existing Questing worlds are unchanged.
- **The Training spawn mode is now Admin.** Saved training bots still spawn.
- **Removed:** `/bot nav_mode` and the "allow everyone to change skins" toggle. Owners can always pick preset skins for their own bots.
- **Recipe viewers:** with REI, EMI or JEI installed, their side panel can sit in the wrong place on the bot inventory screen when the window is small or the GUI scale is large.
- **Carpet:** if you use Carpet, use 1.4.193 or newer.
- **Servers:** per-bot settings from a client need 1.1.254 or newer on the server.
- Both client and server need the mod. Don't install it together with the original *AI-Player* mod.
- The AI features are optional and off by default. Open the Guide (`]`), then **AI setup** to turn them on. If you answer yes to giving new companions a soul, bots that never had one get one when they next join. `/bot soul disable <bot>` turns it off for that bot.
- **Testing so far:** every change was tested in a test world and by automated tests. Long sessions and multiplayer with other real players have had less testing, so please report anything odd on the Discord.
Voice lines are synthetic speech generated with licensed text-to-speech.

# Frens 1.1.230: a smoother first world
This update fixes what a brand-new player runs into in the first hour, found by installing Frens from scratch on a new Survival world with cheats off.
> ⚠️ **The AI chat and voice features are still in beta.** Everything below works without them. **Questions, bugs and feedback: join the [Frens Discord](https://discord.gg/ceRM6YdMvg).**
## Works with cheats off
- **The singleplayer host can use Frens in a world with Allow Commands off.** Before, the roster, follow toggle and other buttons failed with "Unknown or incomplete command", so a new player couldn't get or command a companion.
- **No Carpet needed to stop a bot.** `/bot stop` no longer shows a red error without Carpet installed.
- **Clearer feedback.** Spawning a bot that's already here tells you so. One stop prints one line. The roster no longer lists bots that are already in the world. A brand-new companion says "Hey" instead of "welcome back". Addressing a bot while AI chat is off tells you where to turn it on.
## Companions on a fresh world
- **Woodcutting from nothing.** Ask a bot with no axe to chop wood and it punches a tree, makes a crafting table, sticks and a wooden axe, then keeps going.
- **Following comes back after a task.** Bots used to stop following you after any job and say "Busy with another task right now." Now they finish the job and follow you again.
- **Trees near the world spawn are fair game.** On a new world, bots no longer walk far away because the trees next to spawn were treated as protected. Trees inside your own base stay protected, and the bot now tells you once why it's heading out to find others.
- **No wasted tool wear.** Bots no longer use an axe to dig dirt or clear leaves. They use their hands or the right tool.
- **Safer item pickup.** Bots no longer squeeze into 1-high gaps for a dropped item and hurt themselves. They give up on items stuck up in a tree instead of staring at them.
## Small screens
- **Every Frens screen fits at the smallest GUI size** (320x240 and up). The Guide, bot inventory, roster, recruitment and popups rearrange or scale down to fit, and overhead speech wraps. On normal-size screens nothing changes.
## Before you update
- Both client and server need the mod. Don't install it together with the original *AI-Player* mod.
- The AI features are optional and off by default. Open the Guide (`]`) → **AI setup** to turn them on.

The big update since 1.1.1
1.1.226-release+1.21.1113 окт. 2026 г.27Minecraft: 1.21.11fabric
Что нового
A lot has changed since April. Here is the short version.
> ⚠️ **The AI chat and voice features are very much in beta.** Talking companions, memory, banter and voices run on local models and can be slow, odd or wrong, and setups other than Apple Silicon Macs have had little testing. Everything else in Frens works without them. **Questions, bugs and feedback: join the [Frens Discord](https://discord.gg/ceRM6YdMvg).**
**Frens works fully without any AI model.** The companions follow, gather, build, fight, farm and fish on their own. The talking AI companions below are an optional extra.
## Companions with personality (optional, local AI)
- **Talk to your bots.** Address a bot by name in chat or `/msg`. It answers in character and remembers your conversations, what it saw, and how it feels about you and the other bots. Everything runs on your own machine through [Ollama](https://ollama.com). It is **off by default**. To turn it on, open the Guide (`]`) → **AI setup**, or Bot Controls → Soul Chat → **Setup…**. The checklist walks you through it: install Ollama, pick a model (with RAM guidance), turn on Soul Chat, enable each companion, send a test line, and optionally add a voice. No commands or cheats needed.
- **Distinct personalities.** Jake, Bob (a curious naturalist and tinkerer) and Silas (a superstitious miner) each get a persona.
- **Group conversations.** Say "bots, …" or several names to talk to up to four companions at once. Bots can also banter with each other while idle or working, and chime in on things they notice. Scenes now stay on one subject.
- **Voices.** Choose Piper, Pocket TTS, or (Apple Silicon only) Dreamsleeve, and assign a voice per bot with `/bot soul voice list|install|assign`. Speech is positional, so nearby players hear it.
- **Memory tools.** `/bot soul memory <bot>` and `/bot soul beliefs <bot>` show what a bot remembers. `/bot soul reset <bot>` archives it.
- **Privacy.** What you tell a bot in a DM stays out of conversations other players can hear.
- **Dialogue settings.** Scripted text and voice are controlled separately from AI chat and voice. There are four pacing sliders and per-category mutes. Settings save automatically.
- **Emotes.** Optional [Emotecraft](https://modrinth.com/mod/emotecraft) support: bots wave, point, celebrate and dance.
## Survival and skills
- Type `zzz` to send your companions to bed. Bed choice and placement are better, and nights skip reliably.
- **Food.** Bots accept hand-fed food, ask before eating precious food, prefer cooked food, and pause work when starving: feed them, then `/bot resume`.
- **Safety.**
- Better rescue from powder snow, burial and walls.
- Bots avoid digging into lava, fire or magma.
- Safer combat around charged creepers and when cornered.
- Named mobs are spared.
- **Woodcutting.** Bots can make their own wooden axe, and hold torches in the dark.
- **Crafting.**
- The Crafting window has **search** and **sorting** (A–Z, Z–A, category, material, learned order).
- `/bot craft stone_axe` style names work.
- A bot tells you exactly which ingredients it's missing.
- **Fishing.** Bots find better treasure water, come back to shore, remember spots, and store catches in nearby barrels or home storage. `/bot fish forget` clears saved spots.
- **Travel.** `/bot come` waits out travel cooldowns automatically. Fast travel explains which equipment it needs.
## Movement
- **Doors, gates and floors.** Much better passage through doors, gates, stairs, slabs, carpets and pressure plates. Bots no longer fight gates that a pressure plate or button controls, and still close ordinary doors behind them.
- **Following.** Bots handle diagonal doors, low ceilings and getting stuck far behind you. Builders walk out through doorways.
- **Mounts.** Boats keep pace, and mounts, leads and rejoining are more reliable.
## Storage, bases and multiplayer
- **Chests ask first.** Companions ask before taking from your chests (Allow once / Always / No). They leave 16 of each material and a spare of each tool type. Revoke with `/frens supply revoke <pos>` or `all`.
- **Bases.** Bases get protection zones, owner/operator editing, private listings, allies (`/bot ally invite|revoke|list`) and a server Spawn base.
- **Access control.** Only a bot's owner, an operator, or the single-player host can open its inventory, cast travel spells on it, change its hunts, or edit walls. Hidden bases stay hidden from other players.
- **Stand down.** `/bot standdown` (or hold `\` then 1) pauses following for 60 s.
- **Hobbies.** Per-hobby on/off with `/bot hobby <name> on|off`.
## Performance and stability
- **Singleplayer "server is full" fixed.** With several saved companions, a world could refuse to let you back in: the bots auto-joined before you did and took all 8 singleplayer slots. Companions now join after you, and one slot always stays free. If a world has more saved companions than fit, you'll get a chat note and can bring the rest in with `/bot spawn`.
- Several sources of server stutter are gone: crafting-table searches, making room in a full inventory, and doorway recovery.
- Fewer repeated retries and scans.
- Quieter logs. Detailed follow diagnostics are opt-in: `/bot config diagnostics on`.
- **No more native downloads at startup.** The memory database uses plain SQLite.
## Before you update
- **Both sides need the mod.** Frens is required on both client and server. It conflicts with the original *AI-Player* mod, so don't install both.
- **The AI features are optional and off by default.**
- **Ollama:** install it separately. The in-game "LLM…" manager can download models: `llama3.1:8b` is 4.6 GB, `llama3.2:3b` is 1.9 GB. If you point Frens at an Ollama server that isn't on your machine, your chats with bots are sent to that server.
- **Piper:** the installer downloads Piper from GitHub and voices from Hugging Face, and verifies their checksums.
- **Pocket TTS:** the installer uses `uv`/Python to install about 850 MB, plus a 228 MB model.
- **Downloads only on request.** Nothing is downloaded until you ask.
- **Operators and servers.** Global settings, the AI model and the voice engine need operator (or single-player host) rights. Other players are told when a change wasn't saved. On a server, Ollama and voices run on the **server machine**: the setup screens show the server's status, and the host pulls models there (`ollama pull <model>`). A bot's owner can enable AI chat for their own bot.
- **Upgrading existing worlds.**
- Bases from older versions become admin-only, and each existing base gets a protection zone automatically.
- Memories bots made before this version are treated as private.
## Known issues
- A bot can't yet craft using materials from a chest in the middle of a task. `/bot craft` may ask for chest permission first: allow, then retry.
- Some rare paths can still cause a brief server stutter:
- defending an ally
- crafting with a completely full inventory
- returning home through a door
- The Pocket TTS installer is untested on Windows.
